Buzzing/Humming noise when engine off?

I am getting a buzzing or humming noise right after I turn the car off. It seems to only last 20-60 seconds. It appears to be coming from the rear passenger side of the car. I got under the car and listened, but cant pin-point where it's coming from. Not in the trunk/battery area. Maybe around the gas tank?

The problem is, it doesnt do it all the time - maybe only 2 out of 5 times I drive, then turn the car off. Any suggestions besides taking the car in (I have a feeling they wont be able to reproduce the problem). Anyone experience this?

I hear, but failed to pin point the source. Gave up because it is sporadic.

Have it on our 2007, so I'd say it's normal.

My guess is it's the fuel pump maintaining pressure in the fuel rails. It's sporadic because it doesn't need to run all the time.

Anyways if it's a concern, take it to the dealer or give 'em a call.

Wierd I heard that tonight for the first time and was getting ready to get the VOM meter and tech test gear to track it down.

Almost sounded like a bad ground hum at first.

Thanks will see if I can pin point it, but thanks for helping to "Drill Down".

Ok I'll bite--what is leaking that needs diagnosis?

When I first noticed this over a year ago I discussed it with my SA and he said to only be concerned if it continued to run for more than 5 minutes. It hasn't yet but it's come close a couple of times.

I just got it today in my 2009 X3. It lasted 2 minutes or so and I pinpointed it to behind the rear passenger wheel well on the right hand side. I don't think it's normal as this is the first time I'm hearing it in 6000 miles. I'll take my car into the dealership next week.

I'm with Zoltar - it's perfectly normal.

I have heard it occasionally over 5 years of X3 ownership.

The pump that is attached to the evaporative canister runs periodically at random times.

You will only hear it if it runs just when the engine has been turned off.

I imagine the advice about it only be a concern if it runs for longer than 5 minutes is based on a leak test not needing that much time to establish a negative or a positive.

My 2008 that's 1 year old with 15,000 miles has done it off and on since the car was new. I have just assumed it was either the fuel pump or some sort of purging of the evaporative cannister or whatever, as no problem has developed.

I think it happens more often than most people realize, because if you just get out of the car and walk away, you never notice it.

BTW, the automatic transmission is and always has been just fine.

I guess it's normal, my 2007 gti does the same thing, once I had a problem with the fuel pump relay and it stayed on forever

Good input with the exception of the transmission comment. That has nothing to do with this thread. There is a place for that in the transmission thread. You will notice it more in cool to warmer days because of the vapors created from the temperature change.

Our 07 makes the same noise every once and a while - it only lasts a short time. I also assume it's normal.
