Life after E39?

177k on the '02 525iT. What's the next great ride? I'm thinking '10 Audi A6. Any opinions?

Ha ha. I just saw Rev 4's string below. I'll scan that before you all start sharing your opinions in the A6. But does anyone who owns one have any comments??

If you think the E39 has troubles, wait until you start with Audi woes. From what I've read, they have a real reliability problem. Spend some time on the owners' sites.

And modern Audis are very difficult to wrench on.

Maybe we can hold out until the Japanese or Koreans catch up to BMW. The Infiniti models are not too shabby, and the G coupe can be had with a 6-speed.

Audi....no way, listen to edjack.
I haven't given it too much thought yet, still got many more miles to go in my 540.
I do droll over a friends 911 TT, very sweet and super fast car that can drive circles around an E39.

Life after my e39!? It's supposed to out live me, remember? Lol Honestly I can't see that far a head but the first week in October I'm picking up a brand new 2013 Harley Davidson Forty Eight to cut down on the wear and tear on the bimmer. Save some on gas too.

w/o a doubt, the next great ride is the Shelby 500 GT & Camaro ZL1. these two cars are wayyyy underpriced & destined to be collector cars. they won't depreciate as rapidly as an "M" car.

I won't say after e39, cause I plan on keeping it. More like a second car, I also was thinking audi, but got scary away. Stay can't decide, X5, e46 m3 or, my wife wants us to get a mini cooper.

question no one has asked. why the death knell on a 10 year old E39 with 177k? I would expect them to last a lot longer than that. unless of course you are just tired of the car...

I would rock a clubman mini but their interiors are puss and I'll never go back to an FF drive layout. Still classy on the outside though.

We only have the 540 imported on the first few years when the e39 was in production, so I am keeping my as long as possible, I am still doing some reading ....on the 840/850Ci....I think I might add one to the fleet.....or opening another can of worms. Actually not too much info on the e31, maybe I am not digging hard enough.

Before I bought my E39 I drove nothing but Audis and VWs for 10+ years. I can tell you that Audis definitely have more annoying issues than BMWs: things like window regulators, wheel bearings, coils, climate control issues, and problems with the emissions equipment (valves, hoses, pumps, etc). I will say that they don't have cooling system issues . Nonetheless, it's pretty difficult to work on a modern Audi on your own - everything is buried. That also makes for higher labor costs if/when you need service done. I can't say I had too many major issues with my last Audi though. I sold it at 235k miles and it still ran great. Again, just nagging issues with it (heater core kept on clogging up, replaced 3 of 4 window regulators, smog pump failed twice, etc). They're nice cars to drive, but BMWs are still a step up IMO.

I just got an E60. I wasn't so sure about the E60 a few years ago (wasn't crazy about the styling), but I have to say it's a very nice car after driving it for a month or so now. I still enjoy driving the E39, but the E60 is a very good car. Audis have had very high resale values lately, so you should be able to find a great E60 in the same price range.

I just turned 250K on my wagon, so I've got a few year left before I need to update, so I'm thinking one of two possibilities.......

The first is probably very unlikely since I'm in the states, so the second is more likely. I just got to find one with three pedals before Jason does!

"The V Wagon is a sleeper in comparison to the V Coupe. The unexpected nature of a supercharged 556-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 wagon with the top speed of a Porsche 911 is stupendously brilliant. The irony of the four-second 0-60 mph time ain't bad, either."

Most 540 owners I know say Audi S4 but I have heard (from bmw tech) they are too much to keep running, with AWD basically 2 of everything there is a 100% increase on the likely hood of something going wrong.

Personaly I am not a big fan of 3's but I might go for a later e46 M3
