Adaptive headlight failure & low beam malfunction

Hello fellow 6ers, bear with me. For the past couple weeks I've had the adaptive headlight & low beam malfunction error on the passenger side. It came on immediately after washing the car, and I noticed the light was out. So I replaced the headlight bulb(which was a pain) but it still was out. I took it to an indy and they tested it and said it had power leading up to the headlight assembly so they said it was the igniter and that it needed a bulb which they replaced...still out. Then they said that I needed a new headlight assembly which was like $1300.00(WTF?). So I ended up getting one off ebay, taking the front bumper off and installing it myself. I plug it up and still no light! While I had the bumper off I went ahead & swapped the boxes on the side of both headlight assemblies to no avail. I wouldve swapped control modules but I couldn't get to the driver's side. So now after 2 new bulbs, a new igniter, & another headlight assembly I've narrowed it down to it must be the control module. My question is this, when I replace it does it need to be programed cause if this doesn't work I'll just take it up to the stealership and bend over. All this for a freakin headlight...SMH

Yes, it will need to be programmed and calibrated so the light moves in sync with the steering wheel. I just had my control module replaced. Ironically i think it was damaged at the car wash also. I think the high pressure stream of water got in through the headlight assembly somehow and shorted it out. I've since put a bead of silicone along the lines and crevasses of the headlight. So far so good. Good luck at the dealership.

If I remember correctly it was around $400 with part and labor. I had an indy shop do it and their shop rate is $90.00 per hour, the dealer here in SLC is $120.

Just got hit with the ADAPTIVE HEADLIGHT fault after washing my 6er. I have the condensation buildup on the interior housing of the driver side unit. Check out the pdf from this forum topic to understanding how observable AHL actions, combined with check control messages, switch position and indicator light flash/no flash, determine the specific component failure.

I'm going to look for a used control unit and have an indie shop install it. Should be less than $200 for indie shop to repair with used control units running between $60 and $70.

Adaptive headlight failure & low beam malfunction

I had the same thing happen I had to replace the control module, and no more going into a car wash. Look on the DIY and there will also have ways to waterproof.

Actually the car wash is not the problem. Sooner or laer you will be in rain and the same thing will happen. You MUST find the source of the water getting in first!

A common failure is due to replacing the AE bulb with aftermarket LED units that are not waterproof. If you have the stock AE's then you have a crack somewhere.

There is a module in the bottom of the housing that will be where the water pools and it will blow out and cost you $$$.

You may have to remove the front bumper and the entire housing to find it but it is your only choice.

Have a read here
