whoa whoa chill out man i think you misunderstood what i was saying. I'm not judging anyone (hell I take heck of a lot of grief for how i spend money). I'm just saying the financials of making 250, paying for an apartment in NYC, paying for the car itself, garaging it (450), is tight on just a pure monthly cash flow perspective. There are other circumstances like you mention that I'm not even talking about. I'm not judging one way or another.

See I fall somewhere in the middle I agree 100% its like the 3 little pigs if your lazy and build your house of straw and the wolf comes or you spend your straw money on online sex webcams, and laugh at me cause I'm bustin balls to build my brick house, and bad S* happens to you, you deserve the punishment that comes with those decisions. At the same time I feel like if you make bad choices you shouldn't be forever relegated to a poor life because you slipped up. (Even if someone never learns)

Its like when I see homeless people on cell phones that person isn't all encompassing of the homeless population. Its such a fine line, which is why I try and stay centered as best I can (at the same time I'm taking advantage of every opportunity I have like with my multiple citi accounts so that each one is fdic insured )

On a serious note (just for clarification) many churches and community organizations provide pre-paid cell phones to homeless individuals for safety and other purposes...such as to assist them with employment opportunities. Just as a reminder there are many homeless people who have jobs, but cannot afford a place to live.

I knew that would come up, and thought about making a reference to it, but this was years ago, pre smartphone days, when I don't think programs like that had even formed. Most of the stuff turning up on google is 2008+ from what I can see.

Truth is, people always make snap judgements about someone's finances when they see a roundel...

You mean the government pays for the free cell phone to the poor and homeless. Another reason why it is better to be unemployed than work at a job that pays minimum wage in this country.

Saw a story on the news last week about a homeless people with full time jobs. the guy thy choose to profile makes 19.00 dollars an hour. not bad for some parts of the country, but this guy decides to live in Santa Barbara California. I'm as sympathetic as the next guy but I could muster none for this guy. Of course he and his wife were obese. Life is random, sometimes you get dealt a bad hand, some people piss away a good hand. We will always have poor/homeless people among us.

I see this all the time and it pisses me off, people just don't understand taxes, capital gains to be specific.

Let's say that over the course of a year I save $10,000 from my salary, you have to take into account that I have already paid INCOME TAX on the salary. I now put that $10,000 in the bank where it earns interest. Any interest I receive is taxed at the capital gain rate of 15%.

If I buy $10K worth of stock and later sell it for $15K, I pay the same 15% on the gain, or the $5K I made on the investment.

Those that save well (from any investments they may make) benefit from this. Sure those that make more might find it easier to save, but anyone can take advantage of this IF they plan and save well.

There are those that reach a level of investment that they don't have to work, they can live off of the returns of their investments. That doesn't mean that their INCOME TAX is 15%, they were just smart enough to save and use a portion of the tax code available to everyone.

Or in the rare cases were no taxes are paid is typically due to realized losses in investments that were already taxed in previous years.
