I believe they are only for the backup lights unless you have rear fogs? Or maybe there are two sockets...

I'm probably wrong, have somebody else run out and check.

there are no taillights on the rear lid, only reverse lights, and, if equipped, the rear foglights. there are only two taillights on an E34 which are on the corner clusters

E30 above Sold

You need to check all of your light bulbs. It only takes one incorrect bulb on the circuit to mess up some of the other lights (both front and rear).
It happened to me. I had an incorrect headlight bulb and it caused my rear blinkers/tail lights to react strangely. I believe the car prefers dual filaments. Good luck.

check for damaged wires at trunk hinge. for some reason the get broken there. Also wrong wattage bulbs can melt the scokets to the point they dont work any more. I think its just backup lts on the trunk lid and red reflectors.

Unless you have rear fog lights, the lights under the reversing ones will not light up no matter what. This is because there is no wiring for them. Unless you know that your car was originally ordered with rear fogs I would remove the bulbs and save them for anything else that will eventually burn out.
