What great movie(s) have you seen lately? LIST!
What awsome movie have you seen lately? And please don't mention any TV episodes =)
I just watched two movies I loved and one of them made my top 10 list of favourites: 1) The Gaurd - freaking hilarious Irish comedy. A movie you need to see more than once and must have a sense of humor to catch the humor. It's not one of those "try hard to be funny " flicks - I hate those. Must see! Rotten Tomatos score: 95% 2) Valhalla - An awsome movie for those who love gruesome violence. A poetic-typeof film in my opinion. I just wish it was a little longer. Rotten Tomatos score: 70% 3) 13 Assassins - A Japanese film Based on a true samurai event that took place this movie will give you the chills and a better understanding of what a samurai was and was capable of. Fantastic fight scenes and great camera work. English subtitles. Rotten Tomatos score: 95%

I haven't seen any "great" movies recently but I do have 13 Assassins on blu-ray from Netflix.
Most of the great movies I've seen in recent years were foreign and not crap from Hollywood. Great means I'd feel justified in giving it 4-5 stars. Most movies I rate 2-3. Last movie I rated 5 stars was The Secret In Their Eyes: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1305806/

I agree. Foreign films are a cut above. I dig old Ingmar Bergman movies.

Senna.
A great movie, not just for F1 fans. It focuses on the struggle between two men to be the best in the world. This story could be applied to almost any arena. Highly recommended.

We recently watched Mesrine: Killer Instinct and the sequel, Mesrine: Public Enemy #1. French w/ English subtitles - great movie about the life of Jacques Mesrine. Wife and I love foreign films. Perhaps I am jaded and tired of the crap that comes out of Hollywood. Avatar was promoted like the second coming and I've tried earnestly to watch it three times and just cannot stay interested. I end up turning it off.

Avatar was like the Transformers crap though not quite as bad. It's only worth seeing in 3D on a massive movie screen. It's not really one you can enjoy at home if you're just looking for a good story, it's way too formulaic and only enjoyable for the visual effects in 3D.

Just watched "The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec" a French adventure-comedy set in 1911. Extremely amusing (to my sensibilities anyway).

watched Immortals last night in 3D, and it was amazing, really really loved it, actors fit well in their roles and action scenes were outstanding.

i might agree when i have grandchildren too
![]() isn't kinda based on a legend or something, i think he was suppose to lose the bow. the only thing that was strange is the number of titans. there were 5x4 of them locked in the "box", each god killed at least 2 of them and seems like there were around 15 of them trying to Zeus as he was leaving. doesn't add up....

Very very loosely based on a story from Greek mythology. Hardly bears resemblence to the original story. I don't have grand kids btw. My kids only 9.....

If you liked 13 assassins, you'll love "Hobo with a Shotgun"
If it has a rotten tomatoes score, it's probably 110% EDIT: but the gore level is off the charts! Like a modern version of "Shogun Assassin"!

Saw immortals, and the fight scenes were great. The mid-swing switch to slow-motion for the hits were cool!
Plot not so much, but the Oracle gives a great performance. ![]() If they could have lost the stupid headgear on the Gods, that would have made the movie 10x better. Oh, and using actual METAL for the armor instead of obvious flexible plastic would have given it a sense of realism that was "somewhat lacking." And then there's all that desert in Greece. Who knew Greece was nothing but deserts? Color me confused. Maybe Wikipedia is wrong about Greek Geography. Who knew Theseus (who became the Founder-King of Athens in the actual mythology) fought a Titan named Hyperion who freed all the other Titans? Forget those silly thousands-year-old myths. This movie doesn't really shoot for realism at all. I'm pretty sure they even faked the sex scene!!!

In no particular order, good to great:
King's Speech X-Men: First Class (I like action movies that actually have some semblance of a plot, screenplay and cast. Like Batman Begins) Due Date (this is what the sequel to The Hangover should have been like) Harry Brown (Michael Caine in a vigilante role: lots of gritty violence, misogyny, etc. not the "CGI" type violence from 300-esque movies) Honorable mentions: My Week with Marilyn Source Code Repo Men Awful, i.e. this thread is about good movies, so don't waste your time on: Limitless Super 8 Up next: A copy of Ridicule (France, 1998) is sitting on my dresser

Yeh, super 8 was just awful. And Immortals was like 300 took a crap with special effects.
Next on my list will be hobo with a shotgun and Murder In the First- based on Alcatraz tortures. Yesterday I bought Shawshank Redemption because it's an outstanding film in it's own class. Watching it again was as good as the first time.

Not a great movie by any stretch but highly entertaining if you like the grindhouse genre. I recall LOLing a few times at the over the top violence.

Not great from the reviews I saw. In fact the movie offended a lot of people.
Red State Others: King's Speech Lincoln Lawyer
