E36 obd1 to obd2 coversion. Can it be done?

So ive been restoring a 96 328i for a few month now and my boss just went and bought a 92 325i with 108,000 kms for a 1000 bucks and is now askig me if i want it. If i bought it i was thinking of maybe swaping everythig from the 328i into that unibody because its flawless except for the paint and one ding in the rear passenger quarter panel. Im not concerned about the time or labor involved i just want to know if the unibodys and identical and if i rip it down to a shell can i sway the obd2 into this obd1 car with no issues or anything. Thanks let me know

Yeah, if you want to swap everything you can do it, the body is the same....Or...... you can just swap the motor and trans, then convert the motor to OBD1 and use the same electronics from the OBD1 car. You can ask CJ about the conversion, or just google it. There are about 10 things on the motor itself that need to be changed, then you will be good to go.

Good luck

the 92 is an automatic and the 96 is manual 5 speed ZF transmission, so I would be swaping that in for sure. the 92 is from japan, so the paint is done for, so I'll have to paint it which is fine I like doing all this work anyways. its kind of a hobby for me. i think once my 96 is completely stripped and my new panels are in and the uni body is painted I'll just swap everything over.

Yep, it can definitely be done. It's not that hard either. You want to use the whole intake setup, wiring harness, DME, etc, from the M50 (M50 manifold is a performance upgrade anyway).

My thread on the swap doesn't have much instructions, but you should get a basic idea of what needs to be done. Feel free to ask me any questions.

yup I bought the car of a grand, and I'm waiting to finish up the 96 unibody then I can just swap EVERYTHING over. should be fun. but the idea is to use all the better pieces from both cars to make 1 perfect car and then 1 OK daily driver or somthing. all Im missing for parts is a set of m3 side skirts and m3 rear bumper. heres pics of the 92 and one of le 96

could be a million things man. go through everthing, make sure everything is hooked up, do your research make sure you have the right ECU you might need something as simple as a EWS delete chip. check that out

Have you downloaded the Bentley manual? If not you should. It has complete wiring diagrams for all the E36 variants.

Also make certain you have all the grounds installed that go with the S50 install.

the swap will be complicated as you are obd2. even more so due to it being a 4 banger.

the //M harness you got is from an obd1 chassis, so it may not be compatible to your chassis. you *really* will need to use an obd2 wiring harness and dme (reflashed) to be able to do this swap from what i have gathered.

obd1 is much easier as it doen not involve 'flashed' modules, but is even easier with an m50 to s50 swap....

So, if you're going to do this swap, you know that your car will not pass any emissions test where they plug in a computer, right? Also, you need to bypass the EWS. That's why you're not getting any spark. Google how to bypass the EWS and you will find a bunch of info on it.

I don't need to pass emissions where I live and I did delete the ews crossed the right wires but I think that I need different sensors with that setup .. I have the 413 red label. Im going to try and do this chassis wire swap and if it doesn't work idk what to do, has anyone done the obd1 engine swap into an obd II chassis ?

wish I could help you more. I'm in the middle of rebuilding the m52 that I'm planning on swaping in at the moment so I'm no where near the point you are...

but here's couple threads I've looked at and have been a great help
