Did the TPMS always tell you which tire is low?

Good morning.

Rolled out today on the first really brisk morning, and was greeted with the a chiming tones of the low tire pressure warning. Pulled out the mini compressor, found all 4 tires equally low, and put them all back where they belong.

One thing struck me as odd, however.

In the past, I only remembered the "tire with an exclamation point" symbol popping up in the center display on the dash. Today, however, I had the little "tire exclamation" light lit in the upper display, but the middle display had a red pictogram of a car, the words "LOW TIRE", and small red triangles pointing to all 4 wheels. Note that I do not have iDrive, and I'm referring to the small displays in the center of the instrument cluster.

After filling the tires, I drove off, wondering if the alarms would self-reset. After about 3/4 of a mile, they did, somewhat. The display blinked, the middle display showed the "tire/exclamation" for a second and then the car pictogram came back on, this time with only 1 triangle pointing at the right front wheel. I stopped and did a TPMS reset, and the display went away.

Is my memory going soft and the little indicator as to which tire is low was always there? I would have thought I'd remember it from the last time I got a low warning. Seriously, I would have bet one of the kids that in the past it only gave a generic "there's a low tire someplace" warning and you needed to go find which one.

Or, is this something new slipped onto one of the software updates last year?

It's tire specific.

A leak in one tire wiill show which tire.

As predicted, with the annual temp drop all 4 tires show the lower pressure caused by cooler air in all 4 tires.

I thought it was an update too. In the past I never remembered being told which tire was low. In fact, I remember being pissed about it. I too remember only getting an exclamation point (non-idrive).
Maybe my brain is going as well.

if you've gotten the HPFP recall sw update that primes the hpfp with the lpfp, this was a feature added around that time

No. There was a software update that brought it for cars without the Nav screen. My 2008 328xi Coupe didn't have it the 3 years I had my car.

Bingo. I haven't had a low tire warning since before I had the HPFP recall done. That must be it then.

Glad to know at least some of the synapses are still working!

On my X5 it provides the specific tire which is low. However I just recently read here BMW had removed this from later model X5's. Now the X5 no longer shows which tire is low. I wonder if they did the same for the F30.

My 2007 non-iDrive used to show a single exclamation icon, never indicating which tire was low. During a scheduled maintenance in Spring '11 the dealer did a major software update to the car. Following that the low tire indicator showed the outline of the car with a tire-specific indicator.

The update also made it so the current playing MP3 song title showed at the top level of the MP3 screen. It used to show just the track number and I'd have to drill down to list-level to get the song title. I was much more excited about that

Bmw x5 tpms

I have 2012 X5 and the TPMS does not tell you which tire is low or what is the pressure in the tire.
I think it is ridiculous!
I have a nice 3D picture of the car with all four tires either green (good) or yellow (bad)!

I confirmed at the dealer that this was done by BMW intentionally!

I could not believe it!
My son has a 2005 Jeep GC and it has individual tire pressure in PSI displayed on the monitor screen.

So - if I have a low pressure alarm in a bad weather - I have to crawl around the car in rain or snow to find out which tire need air and then pump it up!

Ridiculous!

Awesome! I hadn't heard a word about this before! I got the reflash last Spring when they did the injector recall. Tomorrow morning I'm deflating a tire just to see it happen.
(I'm assuming that it's good back to the '07s.)

I recall that my '08 E92 (iDrive) always displayed which wheel position was low.

I also just checked the regulatory language for TPMS, but couldn't find any specific requirement for this...which makes sense since the original reg. had to allow "indirect" systems at that time that could not detect a specific wheel position low PSI.

So, once again this is evidence that MT 328i's don't get firmware updates like the rest of the line?

I don't know if I should be thankful or outraged?!?!?!?

I'm in the middle of a BIOS flash rebuild on my computer after having a failure on boot. Lots of little ways to eff-up the system, and if it hadn't coughed up its skull last week, I wouldn't be bothering with upgrading to the latest BIOS. Sure, there's new features to add stability, but as I hadn't had any stability issues before, I didn't need them and didn't bother looking for them.

On my 335, while I do like the new "this tire is low" feature, I don't know if I'd want them flashing an otherwise fully functional ECU to get it. If your car ain't broke ....

I know the RAM 1500 I had during my rental period showed individual pressures. Trying to remember if I looked for it on the Taurus.

Whoa, what a dilemma. Sounds like you're ready for a little of both!
We 335 owners keep getting flashes because our cars were released with the beta version.

Agreed. It's puzzling why they're removing this method of identifying which tire is low.

I guess we are the downtrodden of German cars. Porsche TPMSs show the exact tire pressure by wheel position although their forums show nothing but complaints about their precise system:

"Mein air pressure was off by 3 PSI again!!" (as they check their tires with $1.00 Pep Boys air gauges).

Such arrogant, wimpy drivers! No wonder that they often get thrown out of BMW CCA driving schools.

Yep, One time I started a BIOS reflash during a thunderstorm. Talk about buggering things up. One lightning strike and I ended up having to put an entirely new BIOS chip on the motherboard.

No, just generally frustrated with device manufacturers who decide not to support newer IOS versions on older devices. I can hardly wait for the day I'm told the OS on my car is too old and they can't do anythng about it.

Yes Zooks, funny you should mention that. Last winter, was all 4 tires, this year, car was telling me, my right rear was low in pressure. Very cool, i did check all 4 and my rear right was a bit low, due to the cold weather this AM, I suspect.
Odd thing, i don't see on my service history that anything was flashed though. I'll have to ask next time i'm in there.

Very neat.

Ray
