I know sometimes dealers have offered up specials on the BMW Extended Protection Plan (warranty, not maintenance!) and I'm currently in the market of investigating whether these might be of interest to me.

Yes, save your money and plan on paying for any repairs.

96000 miles is a lot for a warranty- the only warranties you can buy will tend to be either (a) scams, or (b) extraordinarily restrictive. You can surely find places to BUY these, but the trick will be USING them....any company that is selling warranties for 100k mile cars will be out of business very quickly if they pay claims!
