E39 (1997 - 2003)

154K miles. Thats nothing. In fact Ive been looking for a well kept 2000-2004 BMW 530i, but it has to be a manual. I want to be in control of the gears. Maybe you should consider a high mileage warranty. There are a few out there that cover high mileage vehicles and you could still take it to your dealer for repairs. Good Luck.

If you DIY, you have already solved some of the major problems. A suspension refresh will make the car ride and handle like new. At $1,200 in parts, that's a bit pricey. But it is chump change compared to car payments. If you are looking for a "no worries" driving experience, go Japanese. But that would involve additional cost.

I personally believe that the post-100K miles on a well kept e39 are the best and cheapest miles you can get. Once you do cooling, suspension, Vanos and CCV upgrades, you should get another 75K-100K of great driving. If you haven't changed your ATF at 154K, leave it be. Even if the slushbox craps out, the cost to replace it is cheaper than buying a different car.

Just my $.02

Is the e60 really made to be complicated and difficult to DIY or is it just that there isn't much support yet since they are still young in years? If a tech at the dealership or indy shop can learn to work on it, so can we, right? With a good service manual as a guide ofcourse.

Is there something special about 154,000 miles???? 150, 160, 200K means nothing if car has been maintained. 300,000 is often heard of. What made you get your undies in a wad about $154K?

I recommend the transmission fluid change. I neglected to do so and at 207k my front seal blew out due to clogged filter causing pump to heat freezing bearing and wearing the seal. If I would have serviced tranny this would not have happened. I was expecting heavy metal shavings but I did not get that, just black fluid. This tells me the tranny is a beast. I was gonna sell but I'm in the process of fixing a leak on repaired tranny and if the test drive feels right I'm keeping it. I agree with others on saving money. I have yet to do the CCV but that is next on list, then ill make sure suspension is right.

Personally I think it's a myth that BMW are expensive to maintain or hard to work on, I've found the tasks to actually be simpler and its fun
