Should This Forum Be Split into 550 and 535/528 sub Forums

It seems to me that a significant portion of participants on this forum that drive 550is have a frequently displayed attitude of superiority about their 550i vs 535i or 528i. Many seem to be more than a little dismissive of any f10 that is not V8 powered. Apparently we that chose another path aren't really car enthusiasts and don't really know what makes a car enjoyable. The thinly veiled implication is that we bought a 535 or a 528 because we were more concerned with gas mileage, or we couldn't afford a 550i, so we had to settle for a lesser vehicle, and probably should have bought a Prius.

So. Should this board be split into 550i and 535i/528i sub forums? That way, the V8 crowd can talk horsepower and Dinan mods and share their secret M5 envy to their hearts content, and the rest of us can talk about the entire car. Of course, open minded 550i owners would always be welcome.

Don't get me wrong. I love the 550i. It is a fabulous car. I would just like to participate in a forum where there was a little more mutual respect about the cars we have chosen. Maybe there is a process of self selection, and the personality types of the 550i vs 535i/528i folks are just that different. There are exceptions, dunderhi being one, of 550iers that seem to be more open to the appeal of the other varietals of the F10.

Well I think that it may make people with honda engines feel better, but from a business point of view I think that Bimmerfest would lose page views and ad impressions. So if I owned the forum, I would say no.

Also if you can hold out about 5 years, there will be a new generation 5 series, and that 550 will most likely be a 6 cylinder just like the 535i, so you won't need to suffer any more.

Man, I was going to make a smart a$$ comment about the 535 guys picking on the 528 guys in a new 535/528 forum and you had to a ruin it for me and call me open-minded. It was just yesterday when I was called Captain Insano for my dragstrip adventures.

Seriously, we all plunked down our money for our cars and subsequently have a strong pride ownership for picking the car that we did. I have driven the 528, 535, and 550 and each has it's own strengths/weaknesses. Unfortunately, I can't really claim innocence or complete neutrality in this forum since I've been in many lively discussions, okay arguments, about xDrive vs RWD, RFTs vs nonRFTs, Dinan vs other tuners, and so on and so on.

I vote we all stay one happy family and just kindly remind our brothers-in-cars that we each have our own opnions and there is no right or wrong when it comes to the more subjective qualities in our preferences. There will be trolls that pass through our forum from time-to-time, but I'm not really sure what we can do it about them, especially since I can't seem to resist the urge to feed the troll.

That's funny. I purchased my 535 because I wanted a daily driver that gets about the same gas mileage as my daughter's 2012 Honda Accord V-6. I simply hate going to the gas pumps. So what category does that place me in?

What about 520d's (and 525d's). Both F10/11 models.

I have to disagree with you my friend. I am tired of having to read about all you low-lifes and your problems with throttle tip in, and bragging about your gas mileage while we 550 owners are having all the fun with the humongous torque advantage we have over you. In fact, I think the only reason BMW didn't up the power of the 2013 550's to the 445hp engine is so that they don't offend those of us with our current 400 hp behemoths. They know that if they lose us it's all over for BMW.

In all seriousness, I don't have a clue where the OP gets that we think we are superior. This came up once before and I just have not seen it. I'd love for the OP to provide links to posts from 550 owners acting superior. I don't see it. But then maybe I'm so full of myself that I just can't see out the other side of my azz.

I agree with this.

This thread is interesting in revealing points of view. To me, a car isn't a BMW unless it has a silky-smooth inline 6. I know the V8s are fun to drive, but I've always seen them as something BMW had to do to compete with Benz, etc. Inferiority or superiority never entered into my thinking. Shows we can all be happy.

Yeah, this is quite popular around here in Boston. Saw some idiot at the dealer with a base E60 528i and it had M badges everywhere.

I look at it this way:
The guy in the 550 is looking at the guy with the 528 and thinking I'll blow that posers doors off anytime.
The guy in the 528 is looking at the 550 guy and thinking that guy spent 20K more then me, has to fill up his tank every week, our cars look identical, and these ladies can't tell the difference.
Its a win-win!!

Our interest and benefits are best served if we stay together as a community.

There's enough hate/envy/badmouthing from other car brands and BMW wana-bes.

For the brief time I've been a member of this forum, I've learned alot about our cars and have not (yet) encountered any negative attitudes.

Ive got both a 550i and a 528i....talk about a pissin' contest that I can't win.

Let the 550ers gloat!! I love learning about their experiences, and the post-factory options available to them.

Why discriminate, they're all F10 5 series. It'll be too confusing if you separate them. Like other posters mentioned, you'll have to include the folks in Europe with the 520d, 530d, & M550d.

No, the more you split it the less activity in each forum you would get.

I can assure you I don't think I'm high and mighty. I had lunch with two close friends of mine today. We have a place we go that has good parking where we line our cars up where we can see them. I'm really proud of my $75K, 400 hp 550. Then one friend pulls up in his wife's two week old Jaguar XK-R ($110k, 510 hp). His car is a 465hp Supercharged XJ, btw. Then my other friend shows up in his three week old, $112k, 550 hp CLS63. Trust me when I tell you that I don't feel all the superior in my 550.
