I've seen a lot of scanners and a lot of software sold with the 20 pin cable.

Can someone recommend a diag tool or software.

If you are looking for the ways and means to be able to troubleshoot and code your car then you need a full complement of software. You will need to educate yourself on these tools and here is a site to check out http://www.bmwcoding.com/ If you need something simpler then there are handheld devices you can possibly pick up at an auto zone or something but that only read codes.
