Question about Full Merino Leather Option on the M5

With the Full Merino Leather option on a F10 M5, are the tops of the doors just below the windows covered in Merino Leather to match the Merino leather covered top of the dashboard? Thank you.

Thank you for the prompt reply. That is great news. Is the bottom of the door, clad in Merino leather also or is it the embossed vinyl?

The reason that I am asking these questions is that I got into a trick bag with my 2014 550i that has been manufactured and is at the port in Germany awaiting shipment to the US. I ordered the black Merino leather dash as a special order option. My CA didn't know for sure but he thought the top of the door panels would be leather to match the leather dash. Unfortunately they are not. The Merino Leather clad upper dashboard is smooth and it contrasts with the black embossed vinyl on top of the doors which has a soft dull appearance. I am considering ordering M5 interior door panels with the Extended Merino Leather trim in order for the top of the dashboard to match the top of the doors.

Your 550 has the same thing as my wife's X5 with the premium seating package. It has the leather dash which appears to be Merino but the bottom half the door is the Dakota leather or else it's some kind of fancy vinyl. I can't tell which for sure, it's nice though but you are correct, it doesn't match the top half the door which matches the dash.

On the M5, the entire door panel is Merino. This is why I paid $3500 for the Full Leather option, I already knew what the partial was like. It's not bad, but on a $100k car, I wanted the complete package and so it was worth paying the extra to me.

My problem is that on my 550i with the leather dashboard, the top of the doors is embossed vinyl which does not look good with Merino Leather top of dash. I may just special order the parts which would give me Merino leather on the doors and lower dash. This would then match the Merino Leather upper dashboard that my car has at present. Unfortunately it may get expensive.

Question about Full Merino Leather Option on the M5

Here's a pretty good example. Every black surface you see on the door is stitched merino. This is on a car with $3500 full merino option that added leather dash and leather to the lower doors and seat backs.

Wow! That is really beautiful. I assume that the lower dash is covered in Merino Leather. For a US MSRP of $3,500 that is a wonderful value.

Question about Full Merino Leather Option on the M5

More info, as this was a challenge when determining what to order for my car.... Look at this chart, specifically the upper door arm panel. Only the 3500 full merino option has it (and it's something called walk-napa). The base and the $5000 extended individual options have the same plastic grained you have in your 550.

... that chart or the simple rule:

- Full Leather means full leather covered dash and doors. There's no Individual Full Leather in the M5. It has to be special ordered.
- Extended Leather means much less than full leather dash and doors. Only Individual Extended Leather offers the lower dash in leather.
- Ordering Leather dash only gets you a leather dash top. Bottom is vinyl.

Be aware that ordering Extended Leather door panels will not provide any leather on top or bottom of the panels. Actually, ordering Black Extended Leather door panels will not give you any leather in the door panels; incredibly, the inserts are in Leatherette. Only Full Leather has leather on top of the door panels (the whole door panel is leather).

Would it look goofy to have the Merino Leather Upper Dashboard, Foil Grained Plastic Lower Dashboard, and Merino Leather Covered Doors, and Black Dakota Leather on the seats and center console?

The lower dash in plastic would not be a clash to me, the clash would be then Merino door inserts with Dakota seats. They have a quite different grain and thus their black shade will seem different. So you will be moving the grain/color shade clash from the dash/upper doors to the seats/door inserts.

I was planning to order the leather dash as well but after thinking about the upper door clash I opted out of it. It does look much better than the vinyl dash for sure, as long as you do not look at the upper doors at the same time, IMO.

Just take a look at your car when you get it... maybe it will be not a problem to you at all.

I agree with your astute observations completely. The leather dash looks smooth with a satin finish. The top of the doors look slightly textured with a very flat finish appearance. The leather dash looks better than the the textured vinyl by itself. The problem is when you see it next to the textured vinyl on top of the doors. The design intent for the cabin is that the finishes sweep around you with horizontal continuity from the dashboard to the front doors to the rear doors. I saw the leather dash with a Mocha leather interior and I did not like it all. There was just no continuity with too many finishes in the same area of the cabin. My 550i should be better since everying is black except for the aluminum hexagon trim. On Monday I am going to speak with the service manager and get a price on replacing the dash cover, which is a one piece upper and lower, with the stock cover. I will wait till it gets in to make a final decision. $$$$$ Hindsight is always 100% accurate. If I made a mistake, I am going to fix it right away after I get the car and move on.

Pharding,
When do you pick up your 14 550i?
Are you using a Chicago area dealer for ED?

Question about Full Merino Leather Option on the M5

My 550i lands in Baltimore tomorrow. This is the replacement for my 550i which was inadvertently built without the sport suspension. I should have it as early as the end of next week. If not then, I should have it in the following week.

I got the Euro Delivery 550i from Elmhurst BMW in suburban Chicago. The dealership and my client advisor, Josh Douglas are awesome. The sales experience, pricing and service are all excellent. This was my fourth BMW from Elmhurst BMW.

Question about Full Merino Leather Option on the M5

BMW built a replacement 550i which should be here next week or the following week. The replacement will have the proper sport suspension. The first one without the sport suspension is for sale at Elmhurst BMW.
