This is just BJ's online persona... As you can see here, he gets a kick out of tweaking people with BMW "status" posts.

A thread with BJ participating is often one of the more interesting to observe.

You said you purchase cars "new" when they're in their 3rd or 4th year so the bugs are worked out and you save money.

By "new" I mean "not outdated". Not baiting you, just stating what I understand from you to be fact. You don't know the thrill of owning a car in its first year of launch, so you're not an authority on the emotional side of the equation that the OP is struggling with.

I've been bitten in the ass buying first year new models in the past and won't do it any longer. And, notice I said "buy" and not lease. It's like being an in the field beta tester.

Plus, if I had not waited, I would not have had the opportunity to buy great cars like my current BMW 335is and the Porsche 911 GTS that were only available at the tail end of their model years. Some cars are just timeless by design.

True Story

Sunday night I returned from a weekend trip. When I pulled into the garage there was an F30 parked at the bottom of the ramp. It was the first one that I have seen that was not at a car show or in a show room. I walked over to it and checked it out. The garage attendant commented that it was the new model and that he didn't like the interior.

As I was unloading the luggage from my car a couple in an Audi drove down the ramp. The woman got out of the Audi, and was completely oblivious to the F30 that was parked right in front of her. She looked at my ancient, out of style E93 and said "That's a really nice car". I found this rather amusing as people rarely seem to notice the E93 and even more rarely comment on it.

Hell, with the exception of the hood from the 2006 to the newer model years (let alone F30) I can't tell the difference unless they are side by side. And I don't fall under the category of "most people" considering my love of this brand and the amount of time I spend looking at and enjoying the rides.

@OP - These cars were designed well and look elegant, however, it's your emotions and your money. If you think it will bother you then hold off. If your concern is society, the only person who may care is BJ

If looks are a large factor, definitely wait for the f32. The e92 will start to look dated once the new coupe design is seen more often.

The F30 is simply ugly. It's actually hideous. I'd ignore it too.

I received NO compliments with the E92...even when new, but I really dig the body style. Quite a contrast to my 2005 E46 M3...heck, people used to leave complimentary notes on my window!

I'm receiving a lot of compliments with my "bare bones" E90 328i, but having to hang out in Wal Mart parking lots all day to get the deserved attention is getting old.

This morning, I had a guy in a brand new (dealer tags still on it) Audi Cabrio nearly wrap himself around a tree and give himself whiplash checking out my ancient E93 (top down). If I were vain, I would naturally assume he was checking me out. Honestly, I think he was admiring the E93.

Worst car purchase I ever made was a "first year of launch" new car nightmare. Never so glad to be rid of a car. Only one of my cars that I ever traded as opposed to sold, and it sat on the dealer's lot for nearly a year and a half before it was gone. Spoke to the used car manager a few months later and he confirmed it was one of the biggest dogs he ever tried to move.

There's more than enough thrills in life without dealing with that one more than once.

On the contrary, I think the E92 is about the best looking car BMW has ever built. I can't stand the look of the F30, I'm praying they get rid of the hideous headlights with the F32, otherwise I'll be waiting for the next generation to make a purchase or I'll pick up a low-mileage CPO E92.

Should have figured that out when I noticed he listed his 328 is a "Luxury Sedan". For some reason he left out “Entry Level”

This. The 335is is a special car and if you're having trouble deciding whether you should buy one based on just looks, then this isn't the car for you. This is a special model designed by BMW NA and produced only for the North American market. Among other things, it has unique styling touches and one of the best exhausts ever found on a BMW. It's also available with the DCT, the only other 3 Series besides the M3 to get this transmission.

BTW, the 335is was the first "is" model that BMW has produced since the E36 models, the 318is, 323is, 325is, and the 328is, the last "is" model produced in 1998.

So if your only concern is that you'll look "dated", you definitely want the more mundane and much more common F30. Then you'll just look dated along with every other F30 in 3 years when BMW does an LCI.

No BMW since E21 323i made me do a double-take as E92 when I saw the first ones years ago. They still do. Especially ///M but even E46 ///M looks awesome today. Regular E46 coupe not so much.

That was the main reason I went with E92 rather than E82, even though 1 coupe is a much better ride than 3. There was also a practicality reason, but E92 still looks better than any other BMW out there. OK, GC has an awesome presence when seen live, but it is still not as beautiful as E92.

Of course I'm biased. Who cares ...

I think it's pretty annoying that everyone has "my" car now. Back in 08 when i had my barbera red coupe it was pretty legit. Not necessarily teenage boys but also middle aged women. Although the teenage boys are definitely more annoying cause you know they all have the coolguy thing going. My new '11 is an LCI but i have to admit can't wait to get out of it (assuming the F32 isnt a disaster), one of the reasons is the bar mitzvah syndrome.

Something I haven't thought of, does anyone know about the DCT being offered in 2013?

And just for clarity, I could care less about the "bar mitzvah" syndrome.

"bar mitzvah syndrome"? I thought boys do the bar mitzvah thing when they are 13?

Where I live, the high school parking lot is full of "new" BMWs and Audis. But, who gives a rats behind if younger people also like BMWs - like that's somehow beneath you? If you care so much that they are driving the same car as you, then I'd say you have to up your game beyond getting an F32.

This Bar Mitzvah thing reminded me of a recent encounter I had with a guy whose son used to be on my Little League baseball team about 14 years ago.

I was walking my dog at the park and he drives up in a spanking new Audi S4 and parks near to where I parked my '01 Suburban. He was a total upitty so and so when I coached his kid and he had not changed much over the years. So, he sees me walking to my car and calls out to say hello. I go over and compliment him on his new car and ask how he likes it. He starts giving me the how exclusive it is and was obviously dying to say how much it cost because it is such an "expensive car". So, I say to him that I really liked the car too, and that's why I got one for my daughter as a college graduation gift.

The guy almost swallows his tongue on the spot, and when he gained his composure, he asked..."well, what are you driving then?" I said that I'm driving the Suburban over there and left it at that.

When I coached youth soccer and baseball, I never drove any of my fun cars and always had an SUV for the games and practices. That way, the parents could just hate me for being the coach and not out of jealousy as well!

Truly a timeless design, just like the Trabbi. Still draws crowds and admiring stares.
