It depends what you want really. If I had to plug my phone in every time I got in the car, I can can guarantee that it would be disconnected 90% of the time. I always have my phone in my pocket. I bought a 64gb iPod touch which I keep permanently in my arm rest compartment and my entire music connection is on that so my music is always available from the moment I get in the car. I can still make and receive calls with my phone in my pocket. A dock therefore really wouldn't do anything for me...It would actually be an inconvenience.
And as far as I am aware, there is no dock available for the iPhone 5 anyway!

So, the combox retrofit is what I'd need? Does that do anything to the headunit or is it just the hardware that connects the iPhone to the unit? IOW, end-user invisible?

The built-in fan of the snap-in is there because when the iPhone is in the snap-in adapter it enables iPod Out (analog video). Video output makes the iPhone very hot if used for an extended period of time, therefore a fan is required to keep the temperature in check. The charging temperature increase of the iPhone is insignificant.

When the iPhone is connected by just the USB cable then video output is not enabled. And thus the iPhone does not get any hotter than when it is in your hand playing music, surfing the 'net or making a phone call.

Please contact forum vendor BimmerTech for details. Your question is outside the scope of this thread.

I have been through this entire thread (and others) with what I thought would be the single most basic question. How to pair an iPhone 5 with a E9x (in my case a '07.5 E92 w. IDrive). I'm kind of a believer in keeping my eyes on the road, so all I want to do is make & receive calls. The OM says "See separate manual." But I never got one - maybe it was the Euro delivery.
Has anyone paired the new Phone, or do you have the extra book?
Thanx,

Thanx,
New iPhone (iP5) pairs with iDrive on my MY2010 (9/15/2009 production date) 335d with iDrive and with a 2012 335is E93 (12/15/2011 production date). Calls can be made and received.

Edit: I just noticed you have a pre-LCI edition of iDrive. My ex-E93 (2/2008 production) would pair with Bluetooth-enabled phones (BlackBerry 8330). I didn't try pairing with an iPhone, but no reason for it not to pair.

Thank you for the responses. I know it will pair. I just don't know how to do the initial pairing. And now that I no longer darken the door of my local BMW dealer, it is awkward to go in to have them do it for me. (Step # 1, step #2, etc.)

Techie,
Thanks very much! That is exactly what I have been looking for. Now I just have to wait until Tuesday when the phone arrives.

Doubtful you will see an iP5 dock for the E9X cars.

Why connect it with wires when you can have it in the docking station? You might hide them in the glovebox but once you buy the dock you will see the difference.

I won't. Because I have an iPod touch connected to the USB port. It's in the armrest compartment and I don't ever open it.

The same OEM snap in/cradle fits all late BMW's with baseplates.

Just got both adapters in the mail for my iPhone 5. I have a build year 2010 335d with idrive. I have to use the Y cable to connect my iphone/ipod to the car. I do not have the USA BMW Apps that was released later. Anyway I can confirm that the iPhone 5 charges and displays music on the idrive screen as well as being controlled by the iDrive/steering wheel in my car with either adapter connected to the Y cable.

Now if I could just find a bluetooth receiver that would connect to the end of the Y cable and let me use Bluetooth. CoolStream looked like it would work but it didn't. Anybody else have luck with a bluetooth receiver and the Y cable?

Don't think it's worth buying a whole new car. Plus they stopped making the diesel.
