new member- Z4 reliability?

Hello,
I'm a new member. My Jaguar XKR was totaled about 4 weeks ago. I'm seriously considering purchasing a Z4. I'm just wondering if all of you could tell me about their reliability, quirks etc. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Mein Auto: '08 Z4 3.0si Roadie
I've had my '08 roadie for almost a year now, CPO bought with 28K+ on the odo, have only replaced brakes. No other problems. 3.0si. This should have probably been done by the dealer prior to purchase, but not.

Mein Auto: 2004 Z4
I bought my 04 3.0 3 years ago with 22K on the clock, I now am right at 70. I have had no major issues, but some of the ones that can be found on this forum, intermitent wiper problem caused by grease on the control unit contacts, also and airbag light soon after I bought it, dealer fixed it for a couple hundred IIRC. Other than that no problems to speak of. I have put brakes and coilovers on it along with a cold air intake and I autocross it about once a month and can't say that that has caused any problems either, it likes to be driven!

Mein Auto: '07 Z4 3.0i Sport
Purchased my 2007 3.0i in January of 2009 (12000 miles).

Since then:

Busted soft top latch (my fault)
Burned out headlight (replaced under warranty)
Emergency brake (replaced under warranty)
Brakes all around (at 60000 miles)
Front bushings replaced (at 60000 miles)

Now have 65000 miles on it.

I purchased my 2003 Z4 (2.5, steptronic) a few years ago with 49K on the clock. It now has 65K trouble freee miles.... when purchased, the passenger door would not open with the remote and still must be opened from the inside....the passenger airbag light came on a few months ago and is still on...these are typical Z4 issues...

I assume that you are talking about the E85 Z4 roadster and not the new one with the retractable hardtop. Compared to most Jags, I think you will find that the Z4 comes off quite well in terms of reliability. It is one of the simpler BMWs (no iDrive, for example) so there are fewer things to break.

There was a "facelift" starting with the 2006 model year, which included new drivetrains. You should make yourself familiar with the differences. I think it would be a good idea to peruse this forum to get an idea of the issues other owners are having.

Mein Auto: 2006 Z4 3.0i
I purchased my 2006 3.0i in May 2009 CPO with 39K it now has 86K and is my daily driver I have had the following issues all covered under the warranty which expired in May of this year:

Hydraulic motor for the top failed in April 2010 and replaced after 6 months of fighting with BMW
Computer failed and replaced in June 2010
3 oxygen sensors replaced - about once a year
Passenger side mirror fell out, dealer glued back in, no charge in 2009
Water pump failed and was replaced in April of this year
Blown door speakers, replaced in 2009
All of the bolt covers in the consol have fallen off and are missing and the grommet around the door button on the driver side has gone missing and the driver side seat belt holder snapped.

The stock tires did not last more than 20,000 and were useless/dangerous in the snow, if you live in the snow belt get a set of winter tires on dedicated rims.

Do not under any circumstances have the dealer do maintenance unless you have a high limit credit card, I have never had a visit that cost me less than $1,000 in maintenance.

Every time I go to the dealer they hard sell me Nitrogen in the tires and a fuel injector flush and try to make me feel like I'm abusing the car because I say no.

Other than that it has been trouble free

I just bought my 3.0si based solely on Consumer Reports rating the '06 and '07 Z4 as one of their most reliable used car buys.

Goeslikeschnell-

I enjoyed your comment. I bought my 06 Z4 with 25K on the clock and did no research at all. I just loved the car. Having read what you posted, I feel even better now!
Thanks

We bought our 2003 Z4 3.0i auto 3 years ago. It's been one of the most reliable cars we've ever owned. Got it with 28,000 miles on the clock and we're up to 42,000 now. (Well, I do have another car, a truck and two motorcycles, so sometimes the mileage doesn't exactly "rack up" on the Z4. )

We've replaced the brakes, a headlight, had a couple oil changes and recently the original battery (yup) gave up the ghost and was replaced.

Follow the recommended maintenance schedule. Find yourself a good, non-dealer mechanic and bring them booze at Christmas.

Otherwise, buy, drive, enjoy. Mix sun and wonder why everyone doesn't own a roadster!

I've got an `03 2.5 roadster with the sport package and SMG transmission. I bought it in early 07 with about 45k miles. It's now got about 108k.

The instrument panel has been replaced twice. Once under warranty and once at my expense. I had the brakes done about a year and a half ago. Last year, the SMG transmission failed and the pump and relay had to be replaced at a cost of about $1,100. Most Z4's don't have SMG so that probably won't be an issue for you.

Earlier this year, I had some oil leaks repaired and the rear bushings were replaced at that time and my indy mechanic replaced the radiator and overflow tank as a preventative measure since they often fail around 100k.

The one issue that hasn't been mentioned is sticky steering. This doesn't affect all models but it's something you should research here and on other forums. It's probably the most common issue with these cars.

I love my Z4! It's nearly 10 years old but looks new, drives great and gets compliments every day.
