Thinking about pulling the trigger

I've been lusting after an E38 for a good 13 years now, ever since the 99 facelift really. I'm finally in a position where an E38 is a realistic pricetag and I can run it as a second vehicle, so if I get over my head with a DIY repair I'm not going to be stranded.

I've narrowed my preferred focus to the 2001 model year with the widescreen NAV display and I've even found what I consider to be damn near the ideal E38 for my tastes. Its an 01 740i Sport...or at least I believe it to be a Sport model...its got the M parallel wheels, blacked out door trim, three spoke steering wheel and the Steptronic shifter. 125k miles, Crimson over black leather and the photos are absolutely goregeous. Asking price is $7k or best reasonable cash offer.

The steering wheel is a bit odd to me, it appears to have a wood rim instead of that right or no? The car also has a few M badges on the trunk lid and one on the dash next to the center stack which makes me suspect this might be a kid's beater. Any thoughts?

Edit: The seller says its a steering wheel cover. Uploaded some pics.

I've yet to see the car in person because its a good 3 hour trip...if I go I want to make the trip once and I'm taking a car trailer with me to bring it home if it checks out. I've got the basic inspection list from so I know a few things to look for, but does anyone have any particular tips for me?

I've got the VIN so I figure I'll go to a dealer and request a service history and maybe they can give me the listing of what the car was from the factory...that should tell me if its a Sport or not.
