ED Delivery Vehicle - US Customs

Anyone know how long it takes for the ED Customer Cars to clear customs?

Anywhere from 1-2 days to a week (and even longer if it falls in between holidays)
No real exact science here, it all depends how many agents are around and how fast they are processing cars

Hopefully they are overstaffed and under worked. Thank you

11 EDs; my experience is between 1 and 23 days with another 2 to 27 days at the VDC and 1 day for transit. Luckily the 23 day US Customs didn't stack up with the 27 day VDC dwell!

Holy sheet! 11 ED's?!! Wow. What a stable of cars you've got there! Congrats. I'm jealous. Going for my first in mid-October.

Enjoy! Nothing better than the first time picking up a car in Europe. It's actually 15 for us but 11 BMW's.

Figured I would add some input here... I am still waiting for my 2012 ED vehicle that I dropped of on 8/6/2012 in Paris.

Here's the tracking from Wallenius:

As you can see, there was no "customs release." Per my CA, there was some additional customs hold (which I'm guessing means I was going through some sort of intensive customs audit). As of last Thursday or so I am showing "Finishing touches" on BMWUSA, the dealer originally said expected delivery was 10/7 but that has come and gone.

Wrote an email to bmweuropeandelivery@bmwusa.com Monday morning and did not receive a reply.

Currently on 9 weeks, 2 days. So, I have about 5 more days before the "8-10 weeks" expected is up.

At this point, I have given up pushing this... going crazy.

Sadly, this happens. It may be luck of the draw or something about your car or drop location that piqued US Customs interest. I know there have been several people squirrel away stuff on/in ED cars and it makes CBP go nuts when they find stuff in an ED car.

Hopefully it will be released soon

Mine went through customs in a day, but waited for the Agricultural Inspection for 10 days.

Another of the many vagaries of ED. Most of the time everything is nominal, but it can be incredibly irritating when it's your turn in the barrel. After 15 ED's (11 with BMW) you learn to roll with it as it's 100% out of your control. Tough for the type A's that drive nice German iron

I should have read this thread before I started one myself. More than 2 weeks with customs and I'm looking at a second weekend in a row in which I have to alter my plans to head out to the desert. My dealership is in Anaheim and I live in San Diego, so I can't just make a spontaneous jaunt over once it's finally ready to pick up.

Very irritating!!

Mine was delivered to Brunswick port on 10.01 and i got a phone from Francesca on 10.12 that my PCD redelivery is scheduled for 10.29

incredible, too long a wait for me.

Update: Called BMW ED department again today and was told my car is still waiting a hold at the VDC... and has been since 9/25/2012. So that's 3 weeks at the VDC waiting for a navigation update, or something else they aren't telling me. Time since dropoff is now 10 weeks.

I'm not usually high on rattling NA's cage on ED's but if your car has really been at the VDC (not USCBP or Ag) since 9/25 they owe you an explanation better than the one you received.

I agree... the lady at BMW ED said that they don't have any more details but that the dealer would have more details after they receive the car. I guess I should push them harder, or is it smarter to push through my CA?

+1. It's also worth noting that both Customs and the USDA have to inspect & sign off on tourist-delivery cars. Among other things, Agriculture does not like it when you visit a working farm. The official Bimmerfest Neuschwanstein photo spot is on a working farm. Now, if any of the inspectors have figured that out....

Your best bet is the ED department in NJ - talk to Simone. They have a direct line to the VDC and should have a satisfactory answer within 24 hours.

Hi Dick,

Thank you very much for that contact info. I asked for Simone yesterday and was hesitantly transferred to her voicemail. Left her the details of my car and she gave me a call back today saying that my car had been released to trucking as of last night; there was a problem updating the navigation from Euro to US maps because some code wasn't working. Whether or not they are blowing steam about losing track of my car (and found it when asked) is another story, but honestly I'm just happy to see movement. Thank you! Hopefully get my car before 11 weeks
