And, again, please reference the photos above, the new screen does not have 2" of helmet-head plastic atop it nor does it have anything on the sides burying it in a cave. It's less invasive in your line of sight. Whether or not it's attractive is subjective, but physically it occupies a lot less mass vs. the older design.

BJ
Since you never owned a E9x with iDrive and I do not own an F30 I will wait until I have had some time driving an F30 before I come to a final conclusion as to which I prefer.

This is your forum, and I'm sure you're treated like The King Badass by the high school boys drooling over your ride that's just out of the reach of their Bar Mitzvah savings, but you may want to come to grips with the fact that the F30 is a great car and eventually you'll be driving one.

And before you say "never" go talk to all the E46 owners circa 2006 who said the same nasty crap about the E90 who are happily driving them right now.

Fortunately, BMW in their infinite wisdom, have elected to call the new 3 series M cars F80 and F82. They might even be 4 series in the new coupe version. I do like the increased space in the new 3 series for the full figured junior executive.

The new 3 series is a great car, it is just a little dull. Not even pot holes are exciting for the "spirited driver" any more! Look at the discussion here...it is about the bloody navigation display!

[I wouldn't call a completely different engine, drivetrain, suspension and brakes "trim"]

I recall E90 discussions on topics like collapsible headlight switches, positioning of power window switches and of course mighty tomes extolling the evil of retractable cup holders .

Driving around a blind curve (where you don't see the cruiser until it is too late). I was changing the HUDs brightness setting (twilight). Kind of like walking, talking and chewing gum at the same time.

The iDrive screen position and controler is the best interface to me right now. The HUD in the F30, F10 and F01 just makes it the best, IMO. I always liked the VW MFD since 2007, where it shows current street and arrow view in the instrument cluster while the OEM Nav screen is showing full map view, always standard with Nav and now in full color. But HUD is better just because it is higher in the dash -again- and right there with the natural eye level view.

No need to lower your view to look at the instrument cluster.
I totally disagree with you, although that does not cost you your status as my favorite poster on the topic of vehicle electronics (not that you should care if it did!).

I had an Acura TSX with a touchscreen. With the on screen controls, it was so much easier to navigate screens and get things done then messing around with a dial that I spent a lot less time distracted by the system.

And, IMO, the BMW way of doing things has the system spread out in so many places that it is very distracting to use. Dial on the arm rest, some relevant hard buttons on the dash, hard buttons on the armrest as well, and the HVAC and audio stuff all spread out in different places. I love iDrive, but it is an ergonomic mess.

You can easily demonstrate this to yourself by holding your smart phone in your direct line of site and then looking at an object in the distance.

If you are looking at the screen you are not seeing far enough ahead to be driving safely regardless of where it is placed so it is going to be necessary to view the screen in "short bursts and constantly refocus on the road ahead. I don't think that the fact that the F30 screen is slightly higher than the one in the E90 is going to make much of a difference.

As for the aesthetics, that is a matter of taste. I personally don't think it is horrible but I think it could have been better integrated into the interior design. Would not be a deal breaker for me if I was interested in purchasing an F30.

CA
That's just a physical reality, and a very serious problem. In both the F30 and E90, iDrive takes my eyes off the road far to often. I love the system, but I'm not sure it is the safest gizmo every developed.

Distracted while driving around a blind curve is never a good idea. I don't blame the HUD for the driver error in judgement, especially when you were playing with it at the time.

You didn't miss it. It will come around again!

I think we should have a Bimmerfest greatest hits album. The first disk will include "Should I ditch my RFTs?", "If you care about ride quality, you should buy a Lexus!", "AWD vs. RWD", "You are a dummy if you didn't order ZSP/M-sport", "My car exploded on a pothole and an innocent pedestrian was wounded by the flying pieces of my RFTs", "How often should I change the oil?", "Mike Miller is a deity", "When I die, I want to be buried in a coffin lined with saddle brown leather and an anthracite headliner", "Lexus is just a rebadged Infiniti", and "Decontented "(also known as the "BMW Blues"). Special bonus track will be "Chicks dig wagons.."

The F30 doesn't drive like the E90 did. The E90 had more 'direct' feel to it. The F30 was designed for those those that meet the average age of the car and are suffering from back problems.
