New M3 owner with a few questions

Intro:
Hey guys, I just picked up a decent 99 m3 convertible. Found it on CL at a used car lot, and all I know is that it hasn't been wrecked and it has no rust. Has a misfire on one of the cylinders so I did a compression test before buying it and it checked out ok. I did notice the boot on the bottom of the particular coil that was misfiring was a little worn and cracked, and it was also loose compared to the other coils. I tightened it up and I don't feel the misfire as much but I would have to scan it to see if its still there.

The Problems:
So I only have a few issues with this car. First thing I noticed was that both front windows will not roll down. I heard on the convertibles that they are supposed to roll down just slightly when opening and closing doors, neither of them do that. The rear quarter windows go up and down just fine.
The other thing is the central locking mechanism. It will open and lock using the key and handle on the outside of the door, but using the central button on the console, it won't. Doesn't matter if the car is running, not, doors opened, or closed. Couldn't get it to work.
I read somewhere that these two problems could be related? But the majority of what I read involved all windows not rolling up or down, so I am a bit confused as to where to begin. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
Thanks for everyone who helps me out.

As far as the misfire goes, you should replace any cracked or worn coil boots with new ones. It's a good idea to go through and check each plug well for oil while you're inspecting the boots (replace valve cover gasket if necessary), and replace the spark plugs while you're in there. All very easy stuff. If the car misfires, it will trip the CEL.

As far as the windows go, I'd start investigating related relays, specifically the "comfort" relay.

Silly me. I changed a blown fuse and now everything works.. I'm replacing the valve cover gaskets and spark plugs now. Cleared the codes and ill drive it around to see if it throws anymore codes at me. Thanks again

I actually don't have any pics of the car! I left it at my friends garage for the weekend. I'm running errands all weekend so I won't have time to wrench on it I'll see if I can take a few pics on Monday and put them up. I need to do a few more things to it before I make it my daily.

So I got a couple more q's

For those of you guys who have a 5 speed, when I shift into reverse, the shifter hits the inside of the center console and moves it a bit. It probably isn't good for it but thats the only way I can shift into reverse. Is their an adjustment for this?

Another thing is with the Conv top. When I open it, it takes a little longer than I consider normal, and it will stop when the top is halfway into the storage compartment. I will have to push it back manually a little and then it will continue on its own. It closes quicker and just fine by itself. Do you think simple lubrication would fix this?

Thanks again and I can't wait to get back to work on it next week.

Hmm, I'm not sure about the shifter.

As for the top, my bet is a tension strap. Check out the sticky at the top for convertibles and pour over the documents I attached. They should help get you started.

I'd say the shifter bushings are shot.

Worn shifter bushings.. Sounds like a bit of a job. Does that involve dropping the trans?

No, it can be tricky, but on the E36 you can swap out the shifter bushings without removing anything. Just gotta feel around with your hands on top of the trans for a bit to unlatch something.

That doesn't sound too bad, i'll have to take a look at it next week. Well I got a few pics of the car from the ad that was on CL. I removed the front bumper to tow it on the dolly and also to fix the imperfections on it. It will probably need some fiberglass work to straighten it out and then some fresh paint.

Here is how the head looks after removing the valve cover gaskets. Not too bad for 146,000 miles.

One other thing I want to get some opinions on is the front springs. The car seems kind of low, and I think its stock but a mechanic friend of mine thinks that the front springs were cut for a more "hotrod" look. I took pics of the spring. Maybe someone can tell?

Looks pretty nice! As far as the ride height goes, it doesn't look much, if any, lower than stock to me.
