whatever it is, its unrelated to what you just changed, so you must have knocked something. This is impossible to diagnose on the internet, please read the "must read" sticky

If all lights on the dash come on as usual and nothing happens when the key is turned, it could be a couple of things.

One is, it could be the neutral safety switch. Try putting the transmission in neutral (assuming you have an auto transmission). I think the Bentley manual indicates how to check the stitch itself.

A second option (which is much less desireable) is that the EWSII may be faulty. The EWS is a security system that, when activiated, will not allow the car to turn over. I had to bypass mine on my E36, but the EWS module itself wasn't bad, my DME was.

Another thing to try is see if the secondary key will work. It is possible that the chip in the key may have failed and is not sending the signal to the EWS system.

Hope these suggestions help.

have you disconnected the battery??????

if not...

sounds like the starter motor is shot. this has an unloader curcuit in it that grounds certain in car electronics to take thier load off the battery while starting. open the engine bay as you turn the car to on and listen for a wirring noise which will then stop. then turn the key, do you hear a click or just nothing at all?

Wouid this be another version of the oxide on the switch terminals that E38 are prone to? If so 1) Switch out 2) wash with switch cleaner while turning the it through its operating range. 3) Refit and reconnect.

Glad it was something so simple

It reminds us all to keep with the KISS principle when diagnosing a problem
