E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

Mein Auto: 1986 BMW 325
New 86 325 owner with a couple of questions

Hello,
I just picked up a 1986 325 2 door for my Dad (He loves E-30s). I'm just trying to get the car to 100% before I bring it to him. The car looks to be in very good condition but as I pulled it into the garage, I noticed a pretty steady oil leak coming from the back of the engine. This sparked some curiosity about handling a couple of other projects.

1) The Oil: I spoke with a BMW guy locally here in Boston and he told me it was probably either the oil sensor behind the oil filter or one of the plugs behind the motor. Is there a specific name for these plugs so I can find instructions on how to replace them?

2) Electric Cooling Fan: This car is going to have to deal with commuting in some traffic so I thought it would be a good idea to do an electric fan conversion. Can anyone recommend a brand?

3) A/C Compressor: The A/C works and the clutch seems fine but the compressor seems to make a lot of noise. Does this require replacement or can something be fixed on the compressor? Cost?

The oil leak is probably the rear main seal. I work at a parts store and very rarely will someone need to replace a freeze out plug on an import. Mostly just diesels and chevy v-8's. As long as the clutch works properly on the fan, there shouldn't be a problem. I converted to the electric fan only to free up room in the engine bay, its thermostatically probe controlled. Kicks on automatically at a adjustable tempature. You may have a proffessional look at the compressor. It could be low on oil or just ready to go out.
