Perhaps its the sending unit that has gone bad in the tank. I seem to recall seeing a write up about replacing the pump and it talking about the sending unit. Anyone else recall this at all?

That seems like a more likely culpret than the guage itself...but with an E36 you never know.

but if the sending unit was bad wouldnt that affect the light onhi slcuster for low fuel as well?? IMO if the sending unit was bad that would cause the light not to work as well. but i could be wrong on this

I had this problem on my 95 ti. The dealer couldn't find anything wrong, so I just lived with it and in a couple of days it started working again and never failed after that. I suspected moisture got into something and it finally dried out.

fuel gage recovers

There is something strange in the air. Just today, after filling up my tank, my fuel gage continued to show near empty (but not yet at the red light). As I drove to work (25 miles) the gage slooooowly recovered to show over half full when I parked. After work the gage showed completely full. I don't get it but maybe the recovery theory will work for you.

Also, my Range reading on the computer remained stuck at 84 miles (reason I bought gas in first place). According to owner's manual the Range should reset on fill up (perhaps f---d up gage is cause?).

Fuel Gage - Range 'Stuck'

I filled up the other day at about 1/4 tank, but gage and range indication kept indicating the 1/4 tank...progressing to warning light and 51 miles range. I was going to San Diego and back, and my gage then read empty and range____ . I pulled over twice during this time and shut down, removed the key and restarted. Still "Empty, Low fuel light and ____"
range. This is 3 days now. I have opened and closed the fuel cap several times, checked wires in the trunk for what ever. Please tell me a simpler solution than pulleing the fuel pump and sending unit!!??!!?? thanks

After filling up my E36 one day the fuel gauge just decided to read empty. I was very confused but found this link http://www.eabjr.com/Fuel-Gauge.php
The fuse trick fixed the problem! Worth checking out before you buy and replace fuel sending unit, etc
Good luck!

Thank you, Dames...the fuse trick worked...so nice to be 'normal' again (at $4.65 per gallon of 91 octane). I really appreciate the knowledge.

fuel guage

having had recent problems with my fuel pump i can give u this advice.there are two parts under the bsck seat one fuel pump and level guage behind driver and a level guage behind passanger seat.the dfivers side is the fuel pump.when i disconnected the passenger side the gyage would shoot up to show full tank.when connected again it went to empty.turn ignition on and off it then showed a true reading.the thing being the tank is split in two and the drivers side had fuel and the other was dry(like to run it lean)haha.i think the connecter on the passenger side maybe faulty as it is only for the guage and not a power supply.this might be why you are getting wrong readings.by no way an expert but hope it helps.
