Good evening. I have a 92 318 and it is sputtering badly. The code is P1222. I took it to a friend who said it is "missing" In other words, not all the cylinders are firing. The idle also moves back and forth from about 400 to 1200 RPM's. I am not a mechanic but it acts like one of the coil packs is not working or maybe the plug wires are malfunctioning. Does anyone have a suggested solution. Parts aint cheap so I am looking for the best targeted solution. If anyone has experience with this please let me know.
Thanks RGBMR |

ohhh man 1222 was the worst code ever
Have you checked for vacuum leaks? How are your spark plugs? How are the coils? Is your maf clean? ICV clean? Injectors working? How old is the o2 sensor? Along with code 1222 is the code 1221 also present? 1222- Is the fault code for the DME seeing a very rich or very lean mixture for more than 10 seconds I bet if you cleared that code itll drive normal until it come backs or this it would throw 1221 only

I just purchased it and here is what I know:
Plugs were just replaced I do hear it sucking air so I will check for obvious vacuum leaks tomorrow Any idea how to check the coil packs to see WHICH ONE may be malfunctioning? Should I just cave in and take it to a shop, get them to give me a specific diagnosis, then pay my shade tree to do the repair? I am thinking IF they can pin point the issue, that will be cheaper to pay their diagnostic charge vs. replacing parts till I find the smoking gun.. Your thoughts? Thanks, RGBMR |

Honestly do the cheapest things first.
Did the car have this issue when you bought it? (Speaking of experience with the I6s) Make sure 4 crappy 4 prong platinum plugs weren't installed. But definitely check for a vacuum leak (Do this first) Examine the coils to see if they are worn, cracked etc. And are you positive 1222 is the only code present?

tried the plug boots? mine missed like hell even after replacing them just not so bad so i gutted the plug boot and installed springs in the core of the plug boots and its been perfect for 3 years now also check for water or oil in plug holes ive seen people wash under the hood and then there car miss only to find water had gotten under the coil pack grounding it out!

ON. You have to do it after you've gone through all the stored codes and get a 1000 (one long flash and then nothing) meaning "no more codes stored". Don't turn the key off until you've gotten that 1000 code and then HOLD THE PEDAL DOWN for at least ten seconds. After that turn the key off and then on again and redo the pedal trick. You should get a 1444 code, meaning "no codes stored".

Code 1222 is faulty oxygen sensors.
Replace them...

i had that 1222 code and replaced my oxygen sensor then tried to clear the code by pressing and holding the pedal down for 30 sec but didn't work for me. so i disconnected the battery and that worked fine. i then drove my car around for awhile and it popped back up again so i did the stomp test and same code reappeared, the code also stands for pedal sensor meaning tps. would this clear it

If the new o2 didn't help check for vacuum leaks or something I didn't clear my code I just installed it and the code cleared itself in less than 5minutes of driving
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Bimmer App

If holding the pedal down didn't clear the code you either (1) still had at least one code still stored that you hadn't pulled up, or (2) you pulled all the codes but never got the 1000 code before attempting to clear the ecu.

It will keep repeating a code until you repeat the "five stomps in five seconds". Then it will move to the next code. It may have the same code stored several times. Keep repeating that (and recording the codes!) until you get ONE long flash and then nothing. That is the 1000 code. THEN you are ready to clear the codes by holding the pedal down for at least 10 seconds.
