Welcome. Moved your thread to the E39 forum. I think it would depend on if you felt it was worth it. $1600 is a lot cheaper than $50k for a new bimmer.

My rule of thumb is that I'm willing to spend $2k per year in repairs...way cheaper than a new one and you can't buy what I have!

I don't want another car...but how do you know when its time. Some tell me after 10 years ad all the gaskets wear out.

what is costing you 1600 to fix? and if you have maintained well, you should enjoy this amazing car for much, much longer... IMO

Personally, im not sure what the "rack and pinion" is? forgive me, alhough i do not think thats alot of miles being well maintained, should run til at least 250+ given your preventative maintenance is always up to date... I dont see myself moving on to another car, i enjoy it too much and after this look forward to finding another e39.

If you like the car, fix it. Rack and pinion failure is not uncommon at that mileage.

And when the gaskets fail, you replace them. No gasket lasts forever.

Replacing a 530i with anything remotely comparable will cost you at least 30k or more. This fact alone makes maintaining a vintage E39 well worth it.

After 170,000 miles something is bound to wear out. $1,600 is not a lot of money considering the cost of replacing the car. My sister is looking for a 2009-2010 CPO 328xi and the prices are in the $30K range. I will be driving my 2003 530i for many years to come. I can't see spending the kind of money they are asking for new cars.

Regards....JL

Rack wear can be minimized by keeping up on the PM of the front suspension, especially tie rod ends and strut mounts. Driving the car for extended periods with either or both of these components in a worn state of service will cause undue stress on the rack itself.

OK, you have some doubts and second-guess reliability of this car. i'll take it off your hands for 3 grand. Steering rack is bad. You expect gaskets to fail. Fair deal.
