RS5 vs. 650i x drive

I thought I'd stir things up a bit. Maybe this has already been discussed, but I read up on the RS5 today, as the "build your own" is now available on audiusa.com

Am I crazy? I like the look of the RS5 better than my F13.

Don't get my wrong, I love my car, I mean I've only had it State side for 4 weeks, but I love the look of the RS5, and it's about $30k less than my car.

450hp, but the torque is only 317 lb ft.

I wish they offered this in 6MT, heck either of these cars!

My friend just picked up the new S4, slightly remodeled from 2012. I guess I'm just having a tough time without a 6MT, I miss it.

The sound of my V8 with M sport does make me smile. But I'm crazy and I'm already thinking about my next car. I'm probably going 4 doors, so either 650i x drive GC, S6, or maybe even the RS4/6 if they make it state side.

Thoughts?!

I'm not feeling it. The 650 is a great car in both performance and looks. The RS5, while it has good stats, is not a remarkable looking car. Just look at its grill, it looks like a Lincoln Navigator or a locomotive cow catcher.

The RS5 is a beast, but I still prefer the 6. The 450 (now 480) lb-ft of torque make a difference in real world performance and feeling the acceleration. I just have trouble believing that the Audi would match the 650xi's seat-pinning launch. I never really like Audi's designs, but they're growing on me - as was the case with BMW 3-5 years ago. I'd have to drive it to be fair, but neither my heart nor my brain love it. Personal preference mostly, so take it with a grain of salt

Except for a few models like the RS5 and S6, I'm generally not that very impressed with Audi's new designs. As for choosing...the RS5 or the 650ix...it would depend much on how I'm feeling that day.

I haven't driven the RS5, but I did see the first one that was delivered to the local Audi dealership. It was dark gray (not sure what they call the color) and had the "Titanium Package," which essentially deleted all of the chrome (window surrounds, grille, etc.) for a shadowline effect. Stunning, bad-a$s looking car. Still, the interior didn't seem like it was anything near the quality of the 6er... in style, room, or comfort.

Like I said, I haven't driven the Audi (the car I saw was sold and awaiting delivery), but on the face of it, I wouldn't have been tempted.

+1 on interior quality. The difference in materials is related to the price category of the base vehicle. The dashbord plastic. roof lining, interior accents are the same with the A5 / S5 / RS5 with only minor changes (sport style, some carbon fiber inserts and such; alcantara roof lining comes as extra) - no surprise they are not as good as the materials in the BMW 6 (or Audi A6 /A7 /A8 for that matter - all usually over 60k). Also, manual roof sun shade on an over 40k car? Feels like a cheap plastic too... Feels like an afterthought in an otherwise nice car.

I am sure RS5 will be a beast to drive. I would not think though the sport suspension will be comfortable enough for long drives.

I tend to agree, until I drive one of these it's tough to base this just on looks.

I do agree that the interior of the 6 series is night and day better than any Audi I've owned. However Audi's MMI is better than the current Idrive IMHO.

I'm interested to see this next gen RS6. It's rumored to have 580bhp and 500+ lb ft of torque. It's supposed to match up with the M5.

I think a lot of it is just what we're used to, but I certainly haven't thought that Audi's MMI was more intuitive than iDrive. Of course, it's been a while since I've owned an Audi equipped with MMI (2004 A8L), so maybe a lot has changed.

Of course, I'm an unrepentant big fan of iDrive...

Both the Audi and the BMW are exciting offerings. However, I do not envision many will cross shop them, even though their actual prices are closer than one might anticipate, given the generous incentives on the 650ix, and the paucity of likely discounts on the RS5. In general, I view the Audi as a drivers car that rivals, if not surpasses the current E92 M3. Luxury is neither the RS5's, nor M3's, reason for being - the term purposeful comes to mind. I see, and appreciate, the 650ix as a heavier, sporty, luxury GT.

In two years, when I begin contemplating the fate of my M3, I think the RS5 just might make my very short list of contenders, which to date, consists of the coming M4 DCT and 991 PDK.

My wife has a 2012 a6, the MMI compared to my idrive is night and day.

My voice commands in the 6er sucks. I haven't had it work once. I'm my wife's car I feel like I can speak Spanish and it'll still understand me. Not to mention the navigation is more user friendly in the Audi. It shows you the next four turns and it's easier to follow IMHO.

That's a MUCH more reasonable comparison, I think. In that situation, I agree that the RS5 would make the top of a very short list.

I have heard really good things about Audi's navigation, so I'm sure that's true. I tend not to use voice commands all that often, so maybe that's why I haven't encountered an issue.
