replace plugs at 45k?

Have a 2009 535 xdrive which I bought in early August. It has until end of October on the maintenance warranty and then just CPO.

I got an email from the dealer that said the car had contacted them and that I should schedule service. I knew the oil change was going to be due, but the email also said spark plugs. I don't mind if they change them, that will just mean I don't have to do it for that much longer.

My question is, do the spark plugs really need to be changed at 45k miles?

If they say that they don't need changing I will just save the email and if they tell me in a few months they need to be changed I will argue that they should have been changed when the car told them in the first place.

What is the normal lifespan of the spark plugs, and are they stock platinum or iridium?

Thanks!

I also have a 2009 535i xdrive with 47k. Just had the spark plugs changed and it made a huge difference in performance. I have read you should change them around 30k. I run a Cobb tune and the power with the new plugs is amazing.

The twin turbo engines require the sparks be changed every 45,000 miles.

Okay - the manual recommends 45K, My car started showing signs of performance loss earlier then 45K. The BMW PN is 12-12-0-037-244 and the equivalent Bosch PN is ZGR6STE2. Easy to change on your own if you have the right tools. The performance is much better with new plugs.

you need a special thin walled socket to change them. I know Burger Tuning sells it. Regular one won't fit, too thick.

Does this apply to platinium/iridium plugs ? I've heard that they last for nearly 100k with no degraded performance. Truly revolutionary materials.

SM just told me my plugs were due too ... 08/550i/42k - he also told me it would be $600 to have the plugs changed. Questioned him about the cost and his reply was "it's part of the BMW experience", wasn't nasty about it though.

LOL, I did plugs myself. Took 45 minutes per car and cost around $60 each in parts. You need to remove the cowl pieces and the cover, then pull the coils and you'll see the spark plugs exposed. Need a slim socket to remove and replace them. Put car back together. Save over $500 I guess.

I am sure they get the plugs cheaper than we owners do, but still, this is a bit obscene since the actual labor involved is well under an hour. An F1 pit crew would do it in 5 minutes, it's not that involved. This should be no more than a $200 stealership job all included.

Yes, it's definitely recommended that you change your spark plugs every 45k. If the car is tuned, you may want to do it even sooner. Here's a video on misfire diagnosis and can check out how to change out your sparks!
