Does our BMW have unique PIN code for the ECU?
Please read the following link which deals with Volvo preventing software modifications through a unique PIN code required. I think this is very interesting with many ramifications, most of them not good IMO. Wondering if BMW has implemented same type of technology with our diesels, thus no handheld tuning units and if this will become the norm for the other models as well?
If this is/becomes reality with our BMW's, I wonder if we as owners should "own" the PIN code, the same way we physically own the car... http://en.bsr.se/about/volvo-pin |

Nice, so basically dictates who can work on the cars.

Not sure if this ties directly to what you wrote, but our ecu (DDE) definitely cannot be tuned with a handheld tuner, even though that option is available in Europe. I've read elsewhere that our DDE is indeed different from the one used in Europe, although I don't know what is different. All of the tuners for the U.S. model require the physical DDE in order to load their tune, so consequently the DDE must be pulled from the car and sent to the tuner (unless you're local to the tuner).
