Help!!! Rear end problem!!

I have a 1996 750il. While i was driving to work i heard a loud thud come from the rear of my car...i thought my tire blew out. I then noticed that when i hit the gas my car was not responding to it. I pulled over and when i put the car in park it acted as if it was still in neutral. It will go into r, n, p, etc but it will only roll as if in neutral. Next i noticed a puddle of red oil on the floor and found out that its coming from my rear end. Does anyone know what went wrong and how to go about fixing it? I am pretty good at working on cars but not when it comes to some of the more advanced work. Is this something i can possibly fix myself? I have to go back to work on monday so all of your help will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

On e38.org I'm pretty sure there is a step by step description/video on there. It's under rear diff maybe?

Sounds like your rear end is shot. Jack it up and pull the cover off the diff. case and inspect your gears/spline. Look at where your drive shaft connect at the yoke and pay attention to where the oil is coming from.

Have a look at the rear transmission seal also.
