SFO to Munich

I plan to go to Munich and wonder about the flight choices. The non stop flight is Lufthansa on Airbus 340. I have never flown LH and see mixed comments on their first and business class service. Also, not clear if the seats are new or old on this route. Advice and comments welcome. Thanks in advance to the forum.

We took Lufthansa 359 from SFO to MUC on a Airbus 340-600 in coach in May 2011 for our ED. The plane we were on seemed relatively new and we thought the seats were fine. IIRC, for first class they had the fully-reclining "pods" and business class had semi or mostly reclining seats.

We flew LH ORD-MUC in coach this month. The main reason I picked LH was how they configure coach on their 340's, with only two seats in the outer row sections (nice for two people traveling together). I generally find the Airbus coach seats more comfortable than those on Boeing planes, although still uncomfortably tight with the seat ahead fully reclined. Service was very good. We got two meals each flight, including a nice dinner even on a 9 PM departure. Not to mention free beers! (it is a German carrier, after all!) Lots of video and audio choices too.

I have never been on Lufthansa in Business but the seats go to a flat position although not parallel to the floor. First class on Lufthansa is not quite the same as SQ or EK but the seats are still good. They are flat and when reclined are parallel to the floor. You may end up with an aircraft with upgraded first and/or business but I would not count on it.

My experience with LH is that in-air service is superb (including seats, although my experience is limited to economy) but on the ground it is awful. I suppose if economy service is quite good, business and first could only be similarly superior to other airlines by comparison Also, if i'm not mistaken, some SFO-FRA flights are on A380s, or at least that was the case when I was planning my ED this past May.

I flew the CLT-MUC route on LH on my ED in first and even though it was the old first class product, the service was excellent and it was a comfortable flight.

I flew a lot between LAX and FRA last year (enough for a frequent flyer status on Star Alliance), and I found that Lufthansa was much better than the US carriers I flew even though the seats were more cramped and there wasn't a personal entertainment device (Lufthansa only flew the old 747s out of LAX last year).

The level of service in economy was comparable to a US airline's business class (comparing to the few times I flew international business class on US Airways).

The only gripe I had with Lufthansa was that they were cheap and only gave out 50% miles on discounted economy tickets. :-(

I travel to Europe 3-4X annually and usually fly LAX or SFO to LHR and then take a quick hop from London to my destination. There are many more choices to get to London and you can fly hourly to Munich. The stop at LHR generally reduces the fare $100-200 on UA...but adds a couple of hours. AC has nice birds and UA has most of their 777's converted to the new lay flat business seats.

Admittedly, LHR is a dump but the merits of the numerous flights to London outweigh the ghetto facilities there. Just be sure you remain airside and avoid customs and immigration if you fly to Heathrow.

We flew into T5 on BA and thought the facilities were quite nice and up to par. Going through transit, it was scary looking at the queue for entering the UK. I would love to have a six - eight hour lay over to give time for a hop over to Windsor castle. Don't know if I would get back in time though.

AVOID Lufthansa

For once i actually find an foreign carrier that has worse service and food in business class as compare to united.

The LH A346 does not have the new first class nor new business class seats. The business class seat is not a true flat seat. That is a no no for me. I don't like tilted flat seat.

The food is barely edible.

Avoid like plague.

The only redeeming items is the inflight Wifi.

I would rather fly through New York and connect on SQ to frankfurt and take ICE from FRA to munich.
