Sport Seats A Deal Breaker?

Hi All,
I've been combing autotrader for months trying to find a pre-owned Carbon Black M Sport that I can afford and I may have finally found my car. Unfortunately, it is equipped with Sport seats rather than Multi-Contour. I have the Multi-Contours in my current 535i and they are the best seats in any car I've ever had.

I sat in a new XDrive35i with Sport seats at my local dealer and I have to say they felt pretty firm, especially in the upper back. For those of you who have them...are the Sport seats that bad over time?

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

I had the Sport Seats in my 07 X5, and didn't like them at all. The side bolsters were quite high especially given the already higher step in height of the X5 that made entering and exiting the vehicle tougher. I also didn't like that the seat back seemed to be more reclined despite adjusting the seat control. I have the multi-contours in my 12 X5 and the seat comfort is like night and day especially with the seat back pivot control that better supports my upper back. I wouldn't buy another BMW without the multi-contours. But that's just me

That's interesting that you mention how the seat back felt more reclined...I noticed that right away. In my 535i I have the upper section tilted just slightly forward, so I am used to the feeling of the seat back almost cradling my shoulders.

I tried out the sport seats when were planning for our 2010 X5 purchase. They were uncomfortable and I would never buy an X5 with them. I'd rather take the standard seats. This is just my opinion, of course, so YMMV

nothing beats the multicontours, as put above they come close to feeling like a glove , that being said I've not had any bad feeling in the sport seats enough to sour a deal on your 'dream car' .

I might be getting a good deal on a new X5 but i'll have to take it standard seats they are not bad, but the multi countours are so much better . I will kid myself that I can find some new replacements on ebay

Just test drove an 11 Msport X5 with 19's and AD and sport seats
Took 2 10 minute test drives and they felt ok! Tight yet no comfort issues.

But the 2 hour drive from orange county to San diego probably would been a different scenario
if i had to do it w the sport seats and not the multi contour ones thati have in my 2012 535 Msport that i drove down there.
My back was actually annoying me on the way down but i simply adjusted one of the 20 option on my seat and problem solved......

I think that would be the main issue...I'm sure they're fine for short hops, but long trips wouldn't be so great. I did see a nice Silver/Cinnamon XDrive50i M Sport that has the comfort seats. It isn't certified and has 43K miles, so I would have to get an aftermarket or BMW Gold warranty, but maybe worth considering again.

Our 2011 X5 has Sport Seats which after 18K miles and 2+ years seem normal to us and we are in our 70's. The higher bolsters make entry and exit sort of a two step process, but once you're in, you're in and your butt will be going nowhere regardless of your driving style.

Sport Seat option would not be a deal breaker for me based upon my experience so far.

Good luck finding your X5.

I have sport seats and did a 250 mile trip a few weeks ago, they were fine. Like anything else, you just need to get used to them. that being said, i'm 6 2 240 and they're a little tight, but that's because i'm a fat bastard, it's not the seats fault I will say that they're more comfortable than the seats in my recently sold 2012 Audi Q5 due to the extra thigh support (i have long legs)

I have the sports and like them a lot. If BMW offer the comfort seats on the f15 next year over sports ... I'll probably go for them.

Peter: if u wind up looking at buying a car
Ask the private seller/ BMW Ca for a VMI
Vehicle master inquiry
Only a seller can request a CA to pull the info
Tells the entire service history
Different than a car fax
Which is very non informative
I'm sure u know that though ie: carfax

I saw that the x5 I looked at today had not a single issue until 40k miles
Water pump recall
Then 1000k miles later
Vacum pump
Receiving aerial RDC permanent failure" don't know what that us"
Partition wall equipment area cracked / broken/ torn off

This may have been the handwriting on the wall
And The couple jumped out and into something else

For me I'm looking more in the 25k mike range cars

Although my ml63 had that and turned out to be a
Bomb from the day I got it

Usually if these cars make it to 40k w very minor issues
My experience says there well built
And u got a good one

All the best
Rob

Now things get interesting as the Sport Seat supporters show up...my wife is going to kill me when I tell her this one might be back in the mix.

Rob, whenever I've gotten serious about a car I reach out to my SA. He's been really great about looking over service histories and letting me know if there's anything problematic. Carfax is good for a rough sense of how many times a particular car has been in for service, but you're right that you need a dealer-provided history if you're serious.

HB 5 series, Mercedes Calls it a VMI, I don't think BMW calls it that too.

Also, Sport seats are fine, I've driven for an hour with them no issues. I do prefer comfort seats but sport seats wouldn't be a deal breaker if the car was in great condition. Can't be super picky when buying used... I'd rather get a car in exceptional condition over a car with every option I wanted.

I like the sport seats. A little different getting out of them, but no issues with comfort on long drives.

Good advice
Im all over that one

Previous issues with the car
Thnx
Again

Had sports seats on my first bimmer and comfort on the last two. I was OK with sports seats, but the multi-contour are much better. My wife hated the sport seats on long drives by the way...loves the comfort seats. I have never heard negatives on them from anyone.

Keep in mind that the Multi Contours on the F10 are no longer the same as the "traditional" Multi Contours. They don't have the adjustable side bolsters, and most of us find them much less comfortable. There is a night and day difference between my 2011 X5 and my wife's 2011 535. The cost cutting / decontenting will likely continue on the F15.

It is kind of amazing to see this happening. I was looking at '13 535 M-Sports and noticed something different about the interior that at first glance wasn't obvious...then I realized that the seats looked way less cushioned and contoured. Came to Bimmerfest and searched to find that the standard multi-contours from the '11 and '12 sport models are now an option. I cannot believe that BMW would offer an M-Sport with such wimpy seats...they look like the standard seats in an Audi or an XF. Then I read that the M-Sport is just an appearance package now on the F10s. Looks great, but what good is it if the seats and suspension are second tier.

Maybe I should feel lucky to have to choose something more aggresive in the E70!
