Stiff steering at start!
Folks,
I've been reading all over but can't find a match to my problem, I just need to know the diagnoses and which part needs to be changed. in the morning when it's cold, the steering is soooo stiff, almost impossible to steer unless you warm up for 5 minutes, but after that it's totally 100% fine !! is it the pump or rack or what else it could be? Thanks for any help, appreciate it ! |

This is a common problem with many power steering systems. Is this car been in your possesion long? If not, it may have been serviced incorrectly. It may be that you have the incorrect PS fluid (requires ATF) in your PS reservoir. I would try getting the proper ATF and replacing it first. Use a turkey baster or pump to remove the old ATF. Then refill, start the car and sturn the wheel back and forth several times. Repeat the process a few times. Then see if the problems still is there. Report back your findings.

If it is stiff and, "cogs" when you turn it cold, it's my guess that your rack and pinion unit is worn and on the way to Dixie.
