DVD video

Is it possible to play DVD video's through the idrive display screen using the in-dash cd/dvd player? I tried inserting a video dvd (with the car parked) and it would not read the disc.

Yes it is. I ran into the same problem when I was trying to have my car coded. The DVD player acted as if the disc was there, but nothing would ever happen. When I got home, I tried it again and I think the issue was that the speakers were off. When I turned it on it worked. Turn the radio on and make sure you can hear the sound and try the DVD again.
