Just purchased a 2009 650i....

After my 2008 M3 was totaled for flood damage (thread here: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=737756), I started shopping for a coupe replacement. Could not find another M3 that fit my requirements. Almost bought a 2010 Audi S5 (dealer wouldn't budge on price so I walked).

Ended up with a one owner 2009 650i, Black on Black Coupe. So far so good.

Only real issue for me is no usb or ipod connector, so while I am using the aux jack, not sure where to put ipod. I put a dock in the cup holder, but it is too big to lie flat and rattles. I am working on alternatives.

Any tip or tricks? Things i am looking at:

1. Cold air intake
2. Paint brake calipers
3. replace idrive controller (worn buttons)
4. ecu flash

Congratulations. Your comment about the Audi dealer not budging on the price made me smile. A few months ago, I bought a '08 650i convertible. At the time, it came down to the 650 and a 2010 Audi S5. I test drove both, liked both, but was leaning towards the 650. When I called the Audi dealer from work to say that I was going to make my decision that day and wanted to know his best deal, he first said that he wouldn't budge on the price. He then said that the only way he would give me a deal was if I (a) guaranteed to buy the car when he told me the price and (b) came in to the dealership before a certain time that day to finish the transaction. Well, I never found out the price. In my heart, I know I would have gone with the 650 almost regardless of what he had said because I wanted the convertible (among other reasons). I found the arrogance of the Audi dealers I've dealt with to be quite remarkable.

The only mod I've done is to have the resonators removed from the exhaust. Talk about a cheap mod that pays big dividends in terms of how the car sounds.

Good luck with the new car!

Congrats on the car! I love the 6-series! Clean lines and great ride! We have had some great luck with my previous customers on the aFe Intake for the E63 645i and 650i.

Features:
  • Increase in HP and TQ
  • Increased throttle response
  • Better fuel economy, usually a 1-2 MPG gain is observed
  • New look under your hood
  • Washable/ reusable filter
  • Installs in less that 60 minutes and uses factory mounting points
  • Limited lifetime warranty

I have a 2009 650i convertible. You should have a USB port in the arm rest inbetween the front seats.

I also have an '09 convertible and use my iPhone connection everyday. My CA gave me the BMW connector that takes the aux in and USB input on one end and the iPod connector on the other. I doubt it costs much. I leave the connector dangling from the armrest so it's easy to get on and off.

I do not have the upgraded audio so only an aux port in the console, no usb. Chuffed that a $70k car does not come with this simple kit. Also, not prewired for the cd changer so the no eay plu and play ipod adapter

Get the aFe if you want an intake for the sound it makes. You will probably loose a few HP with this intake (proven to loose power on the M6 but I have not seen a dyno on a 650) The aFe sucks in hot under-the-hood air. The car will sound awesome with this intake though. I was going to get the aFe just for the sound, but a friend of mine sold me his Dinan after he bought an M3.

The Dinan intake is expensive but adds a few HP and uses a snorkel like the OEM system to ensure the intake gets cold air.

For software I would also stick to Dinan. There are few others available but from what I've heard Dinan is the most reliable for the 650.

I would also remove the 3 resonators as mentioned above for a better sound and slight improvement in the engines willingness to rev. The sound increase is very mild but nice when you hammer the throttle.

Sucks that the previous owner did not go for the upgraded audio system.

mjposner, Congratulations on your 2009 650i Black on Black Coupe, I lov these cars. So much so I just traded my 04 645 in for a 09 650 vert. I painted the brake calipers on my 645, this time around I am considering buying the MPG brake caliper covers. They cost more but IMO they look way better.

Congratulations on the new ride mjposner . You will enjoy the ride even though quite different than the M3, it compensate in different ways. Even though I like the Audi S5, when I traded up from my 04 645 for my current 08, I still stuk with the BMW line. The Audi feel is just not like the BMW in my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback. So far so good. Compensated for no usb port by getting an Apple nano which fits just in front of the armrest. Will do some minor mods down the road.

Get the 2010 if you can swing it, if I were to upgrade that would be the minimum. A 2009 would be too similar to my current car and the new Idrive is way better.

I watch the 2012 prices regularly, I am in the depreciation watch mode, I am hoping to hold out a couple of years to grab one of those.

Totally agree, the new M6 keep cruising in my dream every night man. What a design! Good things about BMW is the design barely get old. Look at 2004 525i and 2004 645i compare to C,E class or A4, A6 in 2004 ? BMW for the win man! Sometimes I just wanna sell my 09' and buy a 04' for saving LOL. I believe car price gonna drop after election man.
