Door lock issue

Took a few hours to sand, buff and polish my headlights yesterday, ended up with good as new headlights but now I have a new headache to worry about. My driver door will not lock. Everytime I press the lock key in the middle panel or lock/unlock on my key I hear a whirring noise coming from te lock area but the piece won't go up or down and the door remains unlocked. I suspect (after doing a search here) that it's the actuator but didn't find any threads that referenced the whirring noise so I was hoping someone could confirm for me that that is the issue before I take the door apart.

I followed instructions in the first thread of this forum and typed /door lock actuator F3 in the bestlinks, which found this, which has a lot of pictures:

Thanks for the concise info, so I'm gathering that it is indeed the door lock actuator that needs replacement based on the description and the noise and not some other piece that needs repair or replacement

If you find that the actuator is the problem take a look here and at least check our prices.

STOP EVERYTHING!!! The whirring noise is the death knell of your actuator. You definitely have a failing actuator. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LOCK YOUR DOOR UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!! See my thread about the DIY door actuator just posted. If you lock your door, it may not unlock. Then you are truly stuck up the creek without a paddle. You will have to cut into or destroy the door panel to open the door to effect a repair. Fix it immediately or you are screwed!

Make sure to clean and lubricate the lock and latch mechanism, to ensure logevity of the replacement actuator.

Thank you guys, Fudman I read your thread earlier and was definitely worried so I have yet to lock the door, I appreciate the warning as well. Did my Vanos seals today, it took me so long I didnt get a chance to even pop the door open to inspect, will update when I open it up.
