ABS / BREAK /4x4 warning lights
Has anyone experienced these warning lights coming on after you have had an alternator and new battery put in? I have an 05 X5 4.4 I replaced both the battery and alternator and had the Trans failsafe warning come on and had that reset and now this the next day. Is this just my luck with a new issue or is this what happens afterwards?
Thanks Don |

Hi Don;
Try this when you start the car, the lights should come off |

Thanks for the info Brunooo,
I have tried the wheel alignment like you suggested. Lights are still staying on. I took the BMW to autozone to see if they could tell me if it was a speed sensor and which one. They couldn't pick up and issues at all with their tester. Any suggestions where to start next? Thanks Don |

Hi Don,
Try to get the codes pulled by a BMW specialist, can be a sensor, can be the control unit or the pump... Your speedometer is working fine? One more thing, does the new battery have the same specs as the old one? |

Speedometer seems to be working fine. As for the battery spec's I still have the old battery and the new one is from autozone and they looked up the spec's and I went with that one. I am not getting any codes on my dash like I did with the trans failsafe program when theses lights come on and wondering if that is normal. I appreciate your quick feedback!
Thanks Don |

There won't be any dash message related to your DSC/4x4/ABS light problem. The lights are just going to be on.
You have to find either a BMW dealer or a BMW specialist or anyone with a scan tool to read the codes to see what is exactly the cause of the problem. Let me know after that, it should be pretty straightforward Also, before that, it can be worth a try to unplug your battery negative cable for the night; it will reset the ECU. Then plug it back and check if the lights are still on. |

Ok here is an update. I thought I had this issue resolved but crazy things happen. No issues driving the x5 the other day until the trip home. BOOOM! Everything went nuts again. This time a new issue at the same time as trans fail safe/abs/4x4 and then check engine coolant light came on. Immediately pulled over. It looked like I over heated. Blew a radiator hose. Towed home! Next day I decided while I am replacing this hose and I have everything yanked out of the way so lets get the new alternator tested to see if this is the trans fail safe issue! New alternator was bad! Replaced it and the hose and as of now no issues with the trans fail safe program/abs/4x4.

I am receiving this now and do not know what to do...think the alternator bad, only 108K on the car. Put new battery in and had to tow 60 miles because like many others, in the summer of 2012, the heat gauge was stuck because the X5 did not recognize the new battery...so another $105.00 at dealer for "diagnostic" as they said to program the battery.....been teaching electronics for 25 years, still looking for one of those "programmable 12V Auto Batteries". Worked fine for about 2 months and then all of a sudden, daughter in car with my grand kids and the car fails, trans light on, and ABS and other 4X4 indicators. Jump car, runs well for less than one week, and first cold snap being this weekend, all goes haywire which indicated bad battery. On way to work this morning and have brown out and shut down of electrical system, tow for $75.00 and charge battery at my school and now trying to determine the problem. Is is the alternator or the voltage regulator. This car has gremlins and electronic demons and is beginning to resemble the misery of Range Rover owners. My 1996, 328i is great car as is my 1974 VW Bus....dependable.....if before 1999!!! Maybe prince had a point with song "1999"! Work at a school with brand new $10k scan tool system, getting now waveforms from the Alternator or Voltage Regulator indicating past problem or not on top of it yet............I need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Replaced expansion tank and cap which is located in a terrible place over the alternator, so if and when your expansion tank goes, look out. After I realized my was shot, it may have been too late for the damage to either the alternator or voltage regulator. I am haven same problems with lights and today it finally failed so when i get min fixed, will let you know. I am new to this site, but it is super helpful and the ones that speak out are great..Thanks to all for the help!!
