dock extension for y cable
hey everyone, im hoping you guys can help me out real quick.
my dad has a new bmw 328i (i think 2011 maybe 2010), non nav. he uses the y cable for his ipod, but recently would like to hook up his ipad. hes not tech savvy and asked me to help him out to make sure it works, and i noticed the y cable is so damn short. i would like to buy him a cable so he can actually use his ipad, and not have it sitting in the arm rest. i searched around and i read about dock extensions. before i spend the money i want to make sure that his ipod will still charge, hu interface will still control ipad, and it will work like stock. http://www.cablejive.com/products/dockXtender.html any other brands i should look at? quality in mind |

I'm bumping this because I can't find a straight answer. I ordered a USB dock extension cable from an EBay seller and it does not work. I don't see the music on my display, it doesn't charge the phone, and it doesn't play the music.
I'm wondering if I should be extending the Y connections from the other end (an audio and USB extension) instead, or did I get a bad cable? |

I'm going to say bad cable.
I have a black 3' dock extension cable I saved from my previous car which works with my 2010 335i E93 using the neXplug Y cable for BMW that I bought from Amazon. Unfortunately, I bought the extension cable over three years ago and don't remember where I got it from. I know I had to specifically look for one that passed audio as well as sync & charge signals. Nope. 3 cables, no dice. So I bought a USB extension cable and a 1/8" stereo/headphone extension cable and extended them from the "Y" end of the adaptor. That worked fine.

Hmm. How odd that you had three cables not work, yet mine does work.
Probably better to go with the individual extensions if they're thinner than my cable since I don't like the strain it puts on the armest/lid latch and haven't yet made the effort to fish the cable down through the console. |
