Z3 1.9 engine?

2001 Z3 1.9 engine query
Recently purchased the above, but problems straight away! Cut a long story short new engine required. Obviously sourced from a breakers yard. Found out that the engine did not match the existing gearbox? So new gearbox also. My question is what engine has been fitted if a gearbox was required? Supposedly 20k on new engine but no paperwork to support

The M44 (1.9L I4) engine ran until 1998/99 in the U.S. The 2.0L I6 was sold in later Euro models (but not in the U.S). Was the car originally a 1.9L or was it originally a 2.0L?

Just use your VIN to find out if your car is 1.9 or 2.0. You'll find the built date that way also.

The vehicle was originally a 1.9L but surely if the garage had fitted the same size engine they wouldn't have had to replace the gearbox also? If they have fitted a newer 2.0 L engine then there are insurance issues?
