Oil capacity / Sensor issue??

I just did my first own oil change on my 2006 330i. (I always did my own oil changes on previews cars)

I've added 6 L and oil level was showing approximately 1/2. So i kept on adding bit by bit and restarting the car so it recalculates. By the time I realized i've added 8.5L and it's still showing 1 bar less than max? I even took the car around the block and it's still showing 1 bar less than max.

Is it possible that there is something wrong with the sensor?? Did I overfill???

So i started thinking back and calculating how much I've drained. Seems that I've drained approximately 6.5L and before I drained the oil level was showing about 2 bars away from max.

Not sure what to do now? should i drain some of the oil?

(i really miss having a dip stick)

I just double checked in the manual. Engine capacity is 6.5 L. So I have significantly overfilled. I'm glad that I haven't driven to work like that.

So i suppose it must be the sensor - as I can't think of any other explanations.

I've had the car for 3 years and had my local mechanic change the oil and no issues. I finally decided to start doing it on my own (not to save money but for self satisfaction) and something goes off with the sensor.

Unless anyone else thinks of any other culprit..

The sensor can take as long as 10 minutes to give an accurate oil level reading. The engine needs to be to full operating temperature.

Thanks for the advice!

Well this is first car that I've owned without dip stick.... so I proceeded with oil change like with just any other car. I never realized it will take time for the sensor to adjust. And I suppose i should be paying attention how much oil I'm putting in and what;s car's capacity.

Well bit of an update:
Last night I've decided that I will drain some of the oil as I needed the car to drive to work. Well I've underestimated how hot the oil will be. When i loosened the plug, I over did it and pulled it out, I had a hard time putting it back in and I even dropped it into the pan. Well all of the oil drained out. It was at 1 am... so I guess i'm not going to work.

In the am I bought more oil and put in approx 5.5 L the level was showing 3/4 full. But after driving for couple of km, the level dropped to just above min. I've added another 1L and sensor still showed just above min, but I went for a spin and after few kms, I turned the car off and restarted and when the level recalculated I'm at max! Perfect!

Wow... it was bit expensive oil change, but at least I have self satisfaction! Now I know exactly what the capacity is and I know to let the sensor some time to adjust and recalculate.

On a side note... I'm new to this site... but wow... I'm amazed with the amount of excellent info. I will be regular here now. :-)
