Airborne BMW and off to a project

Hi all.

My beloved BMW will be carried airborne by another beloved one: the Herky.

I'm taking it to my new working place, and will count with the precious help from the USAF to supply the hobby shop.

I have plans to take out the head and rebuild it. I also planned to put new pistons but after finding out the price (300USD each) soon forget it.

One big question: how to put new piston rings?? I must take the pistons or any other way???

I'm counting with your help, if you are so kind to help me, so stay tuned.

From what I can see, rebuilding pistons and rings is a highly sophisticated task. It would be better for you to google for expert DIY threads and to look towards youtube for visual demos on how this is done (highly important). Youtube has many great videos that you should take advantage of.

What you should be buying would be the crankshaft position sensor.

Great that you've got the pump. ;-) You'll need the fuel pump's fuel tank entry orifice's O ring as well. If you forgot that, please purchase it before installation.

Please don't forget an assorted set of car fuses kept as handy spares, and new relays for your fuel pump, dme, abs and o2 sensors. Especially a new relay for the fuel pump (but you might as well get them for everything else along the way). The old relays can be kept as spares.

You're nearly at the point where you'll be sitting back, reading posts, and wondering why people have no start problems...

Yes, I will build a thread for this.

I've been reading posts and searching on the youtube for a while. I'll keep on looking until reasonable certain of all the tasks.

The O'ring went in also, thanks. I'll take your tip and get some relays. Fuses I have.

I'm at the point of building a list of things to buy. I'm using realOEM for a closer look of the systems involved.

The car also have a variety of many minor details such as oil leak from near the gearbox although the clutch is not slipping, the heating valves/secondary pump not workinga, burnt bulbs on the quadrant, and so on.

After market pistons should be available - a good make like AE (or similar) are often as good as OEM (I don't think BMW make pistons anyway).

Hi all.

I searched on BMW and they asked 300USD EACH. Totally out of my budget. I don't know the prices there, but 300 it's way to much.

I'll keep pistons, crankshaft and conrod. Bearings, caps, pistons rings, washers, mild rebore and hone (gotta get more info for how feasible is it to keep pistons and how much rebore for new pistons rings).

Hi all.

We have an Air Base located at Azores and do a weekly connection. I was stationed there and now it was my time to haul my bimmer.

Parked, strapped down and ready to go. The C-130 is prepared to do, shall we say, "quick drops". The Loadie suggest that but immediately got a NO as an answer.
