2013 535ix problems

Hello all,

I joined this forum to look for some advice.

I picked up a 2013 535ix in late september. Six days later i had the dealer reprogram the car for the ASS feature, something that should have been standard.

The next day i noticed a rattle from the roof area when i go over bumps. After hearing it for a few days I took the car into the BMW service center. The problem was easily replicated. They worked on it for a few hours and could not fix it.

The day after that i dropped the car off and they kept it for two full days. They dropped the headliner (twice) and checked everything. Noise is still there.

Now they suspect the sunroof, which does seem right. There is a slight give in the glass when pushed from inside.

Next week i am dropping the car off and they plan on keeping it for 3 days. If the cannot fix it then they will order a new cassette.

So the brand new car will be in the shop for 7 days in the first 4 weeks.

What should i do? Can i make bmw take the car back and build a new one? Is this par for the course? I have a 2007 BMW 5 series which has had no problems.

One more thing, i hear a brief buzzing sound when i shift the car from P to D/R or from drive/reverse to park...is that normal? Car drives very well btw...

I am pretty sure you cannot lemon a car just because of rattles.

Ah...no. Let your dealer sort out the rattle. Sounds like they are doing their part to make it right.

It looks like they are taking it seriously, so they will most likely figure it out.

I had the same sunroof rattle on my 2013 and I was a simple 30second fix. Open the sunroof 2" and standing outside the car looking down you should see 6 hex bolts holding down a black trim towards the front of the car. Either loosen or tightened those bolts to get rid of the rattle. I kept tightening them alittle and the souls would go away and come back. I ended up loosening them alittle and the rattle is now gone for good.

The sound is from uneven torquing of that plastic trim causing flex.

Hopefully you dealer didn't do more harm than good...

Alan

Thanks a lot for the feedback. I see the hex bolts (only 5 though) but I don't think I have the right tool. I will show the BMW service guys your solution and see what they say. There thought was that maybe it was an improper weld or something.

Any autoparts store should have those star bits for a few bucks. I would rather do it yourself then let the incompetent dealer mess with it any further. I could easily replicate the sound if i pushed against that trim as well as stop it from rattling once i put my hand on it while driving.

My rattle originally started a few days after i got the car and was actually pretty loud. I got lucky and found the spot it came from right away and fixed it.

I did as you suggested. However I cannot replicate the sound by pushing against the trim.

The easiest way for me to replicate the sound is by pushing on the headliner (from inside the car) near the edge of the sunroof (just to the left of the drivers head).

Also, I wanted to make sure we are talking about the same sound. My rattle is more like a rapid clicking kut-kut-kut sound.

I can't make the sound happen but i could make it stop when i put my hand on it while driving. Mine was more a plastic rapid tap tap tap rattle while going over bumps.
