Premium Sound v. Standard hifi - how big a difference?

Found a dealer with a great deal on a 2012 550 - very well equipped car, except its missing premium sound. Odd thing is that the car has Sirius and the iPod adapter. Anyway, I haven't been down to compare yet - will likely do that this weekend - has anyone done this comparison? Is there a big difference in sound ?

Thanks...

Yes. Premium sound is far superior.

There is no comparison between standard and premium sound. I wouldn't get a vehicle without it.

Maybe that's why they're offering such a deal on that car...

I cross shop between the two, at low volume, there is a small difference, but once you get to mid level volume or loud, the premium is much better. Let me correct that, the standard system cannot even get the mid level volume without distorting. The bass and the mid of the premium system is very good, but the treble is average at best.

But if you only listen to Sirius, there may not be that much of a difference.

Even worse is that it looks like you're coming from a car with Premium Sound.

My dealer was nice enough to park two 535's next to each other and fire them up. One with premium sound and one without. I had the opportunity to jump back and forth between the two to compare them. I found the premium sound a significant upgrade to the standard sound although standard wasn't bad, especially at lower volumes. It depends what your needs are. When I order my car I will spring for the premium which I think at under $1k is a pretty decent deal but if I found a screaming deal on a car without it, it wouldn't be a deal killer.

huge difference, but if you listen mostly to news, weather etc go for standard sound system, otherwise i would not buy 60K+ fine european car without hi-fi system

Yeah - I can't find a car WITHOUT premium sound (other than this car). The more I think about it, the more I think this is a deal killer ...

Premium sound is almost a must for me, my wife and kid dont like it when I play loud music in the house. My car is the only place I can enjoy some music at a nice volume. Its almost like therapy for me after a long day.

Premium sound is especially important if you are playing from iPpd/iPhone. If playing music from Sirius the difference is smaller

OK - here goes:
MSRP: $77,375
Invoice: $71,715
Selling price: $66,715 [includes team usa ($1000) and option credit ($1500); loyalty is in addition to this - factored in as part of the downpayment]

It's a demo - 4800 miles on it.

I've decided that premium sound is a must so I'm not going for the car. If anyone is interested PM me and I'll give you the dealer's info.

Next decision point is if I hold firm on Active Roll Stabilization or if I take a car without it (lots of cars without ARS; adding ARS limits the field)..

I had to special order my 528i with premium sound. It is extremely hard to find a 528i with premium sound in Socal. IMO, premium sound is a must for a car over 50K. If you are used something like Bose sound quality, premium sound is a must on the BMW. If you are into classical music, it will make the acoustical experince much much better commpared to stock stereo.

You need to stop asking about adding options on this board, or else you will end up with a loaded car that cost $90K

LOL - you're right - general answer is Yes, Yes, and Yes (and don't forget to add DINAN Stage 2)

+1-2 = me

(no wife and kid)

I really enjoy listening to great instrumental music with this system. BTW, the Premium Sound in the F10 is miles above the Premium Sound in the E60.
