323is Tranny.

No issues with the tranny dont worry. Just had a few questions on the e36 autotragics theres - P N D 3 2 1- it also has that - a to m- button was just wondering when i throw it in 3rd it drives the same as Drive but it boosts the revlimit and pushes to redline what seems like with more umph (for lack of better terminology) was just wondering if anyone knew much about the operation behind the 3 2 1 gearing
Thanks

afaik, the m button holds the gear that you are in.

it doesn't make it a manual, and is a good way to destroy the transmission. most people do not use this button. the ones who do usually don't do it for long...

if you want a manual, get one.

the difference in the 3rd gear operation is telling the transmission computer to go into a sportier mode. it changes shift points making the car feel livelier.

overdrive does not engage like this, even if you bounce off rev limit, from what i have gathered.

there are owner manuals available online, and it covers the proper operation ofthis button and when it is designed to be used.

starting off on slick roads seems to stick in my mind, sort of like a 2nd gear start in a manual, to reduce wheel spin. simply putting the gear selector in '2' will not make it start off in this gear unless the 'm' button is also selected.

hope this helps. again, i have not read my owners manual for this as i do not own an automatic, so we;ll see what the others have to say.

yeah was just amazed that theyd put a sporty mode in one of these esp on an auto was wondering if itll do any damage or what the story is and yes destroying the tranny is quite easy using the m button only time i use it is in drive on slippery roads it starts the car in a higher gear to reduce wheel spin was just curious if the 3 2 1 were indeed sport modes

from what i have read, putting the transmission in 3 lets the car run in a sportier mode, while the lower gears, 1 & 2, simply will run in the respective parameters (not sportier).

Correct. Putting it in 3 moves the 1-2 and 2-3 shift points up several hundred RPM, and stops upshifting at 3rd.

Not bad for the transmission. Just don't go cruising in 3 on the highways, as it is unnecessary.

lol hahah tell me some about this swap kit I thought they were fairly useless because you can never get the car to run like a factory manual due to computer issues (so ive read)

These cars are fairly low-tech. Swapping in a manual trans is pretty easy, and there are no issues with computers like you mentioned.

If you do the work yourself it will cost you nowhere near $3k. Probably not even half of that if you're savvy.

Thanks Ze ill see what i can find

I've got the trans, pedals, hydraulics, and drive shaft. You'd probably want to source a diff because mine is open slip and for a 318 (too high of a ratio for DDing a 6cyl) and you'd need all the bits that wear out like a clutch kit, giubo and trans mounts.

I'm talking to a guy in PA with 3 M3s he's parting, unfortunately they're all auto so they're 3.38:1 but that would mean really good acceleration.
