Metallic rattling sound at start-up

I've noticed my Z ('06 3.0si) is making an awful rattling sound when I first start it up. It sounds like metal flapping around, and sounds like its coming from the passenger side of the engine compartment. It's only happened a few times, but enough for me to begin worrying.

Any thoughts? I know that's not much info to go off of, but I'll do my best to answer any questions and follow any diagnostic recommendations.

The hydraulic valve lifters are a common issue with the N52 engine and will make a noise similar to what you described. Search "lifters" in this forum and you will find several threads discussing the issue. Some have had good luck just replacing the lifters, some have replaced the entire cylinder head and some have just learned to live with it.

i've noticed that on mine that if i drive it a couple times not too far distances so the car doesn't really get too warm and then let it sit overnight (like in the garage) I get some metallic ticking noises, which goes away if i take it out on the highway for 20 mins or so and let the oil get warm and lube everything up. the M54 in my 330i did the same thing.
