Does the M54 engine in the E46 and E85 need to mature?
A few years ago when my 2002 325i (automatic) hit around 30K miles I noticed that the car seemed to get peppier and responded better to the throttle. My 2005 Z4 2.5i always seemed to lag when compared to the "new" 325. However, the Z4 now has about 30K miles, and it too seems to now move off the mark faster than it did before that 30K miles was reached. Could it be that the engines in these cars need to "mature" before they really start to perform? BTW, neither of these cars were ever driven hard for any prolonged periods of time.

I noticed the same thing on my 2003 X5 3.0. I think it is more of "breaking in" than maturing.

Yeah, perhaps "breaking in" would be a better term to use. Nonetheless, after 30K miles, or so, both cars seemed to come alive.

Of the 4 BMWs I've had, they have all been at their smoothest and strongest at about 50,000km (30,000miles).

I noticed the same thing too on my 2005 X5. I recall the dealer telling me when I bought the X5 that the engine would feel peppier at around 60k miles. I dismissed that at the time as an odd statement. He turned out to be right.

You know, this is the second time I've posted this inquiry. The first time, I posted about my 2002 325i becoming peppier after 30K miles, or so. And if I recall correctly, I don't think I ever got confirmation about the observation. But now, I'm feeling a lot better in that I've got some consensual validation that our engines start performing optimally at around 30K miles. Or is it the transmission that awakens???

You know, the planets are getting closer to being aligned. That and maybe a couple of barometric pressure swings, who knows what will liven up ones speed buggy. LOL
