2005 Z4 changing Serpentine belt

Are there any tricks or tips to changing the belts. They are showing some wear 61K on the car. How about the tensioner pulleys, do they need to be replaces or just checked?

Thanks for your help.

I'm going off of memory here.

I changed the belts for my supercharger install, and I don't remember if I had already removed had the aux fan. This cheap-feeling plastic fan costs about $600, so be careful when working around it. Same goes for the radiator.

It's easiest to have two people when changing the belts, since it may take some force to remove the tension on the belts. One person can remove tension while the other routes the belt. I don't remember why, but I really had to muscle my AC belt... whether I just didn't have the right tools or if it was something else. I'm a beefier guy and it took every bit of force I could muster up. I totally Hulk Smash-ed it.

Having done it once, I'll never pay a dealer to do it. Other than taking some force, it wasn't hard.

I recently did mine. The 2005 has an electric fan and no need to remove it. First off lemme say BMW switched to a hydraulic tensioner from the mechanical one your car prolly came has. Remove the belt by tweaking the tensioner pulling one way to loosen the belt and give the tensioner pulley a spin. If you don't hear anything and it spins smooth you're ok. A conversion kit to the hydraulic tensioner is avail from BMW but its expensive imho. There are aftermarket "old style" mechanical tensioners avail. I don't think one is any better than the other. The accessory belt tensioner remained mechanical afterall... Check your idler pulley too it's above the tensioner pulley and is easily replaceable if you are so inclined (about $30 from the dealer). While you're at it and have the belts removed look for signs of wear on your water pump pulley. That pulley is plastic and notorious for failure. An aluminum version from ECS is avail if you want and comes in 2 awesome colors . I replaced mine when I did my water pump (another common failure). Water pump is easy to replace don't hesitate to donit yourself, there's a guide here somewhere, I used it. Don't get caught up in the plastic impeller vs metal debate...the flimsy aluminum on from HEPU is just fine vs the plastic one from BMW either are ok and will prolly fail in another 60k. If I'm still making sense rock on! If you still have questions feel free post.
