God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

Oil Leak, Changing Tappets and Oil Pan Gasket

Hey so I know my Bmw is an e36 but the engine is a M40 which I think some e30's had, so you guys may be able to help with the oil leak.

Ok so my day started alright, my goal was to change the tie rods. Which was fine jacked my car up, wheels off, had all the parts I needed except when I got under the car I noticed I had an oil leak. Now I don't know where it's leaking from. It is coming from higher than the oil sump so its not that gasket and also not from the camshaft gasket, any ideas?



As for the tie rods I only got as far as the inner ball joint, which needs a thin 32mm spanner. No luck on picking one up so thats on order.

So then I was like ok fine I can change out my noisy tappets out for the new ones I had received last week. And because I"m lazy and don't want to take apart the camshaft I used this awsome tool to remove the tappets. Made by Midlock 13168. It depresses the valve spring enough to slide the rocker arm out and then you can just pull the tappet out.









All was well until one of the thrust adapters (sits between the rocker arm and valve spring) fell down a oil filler hole Couldn't beleive I hadn't plugged the holes, just got too excited and rushed it. So I"m hoping to flush that hole with oil and then drain the oil. Fingers crossed it comes out. Oil pan may have to come off at the worst... I hope.

All in all a f***ing fantastic day

Update

Ok so just a little update on the currrent progress. I have started to locate the oil leak, I'm thinking that it is the gasket or O-ring from the oil filter housing. So I've hit that up started by taking out the air box, alternator and then the plate/bracket for the alternator and then finally the oil filter housing. Can't say that it looked like it was leaking... but hoping new o-ring and gasket will solve that problem. The engine is a M40 btw USA were lucky enough not to get them.





Best part of this job is I get to clean some parts. Best feeling is putting some clean parts back into the engine.



Didn't have any luck fishing out the thrust adapter so guess what the oil pan is coming off Not really looking foward to that job but has to be done. I don't want one of these floating around in the engine



So as soon as I've got a engine support bar and oil pan gasket I'll be set. I need an engine support bar because I will need to remove the front crossmember to get to the oil pan which is supporting the engine. Also have to remove control arms, sway bar and steering rack. Seems like a good time to replace the engine mounts but will see.

So I think thats it I did get my flat spanner 30/32mm for the tie rods but that seems like a long way off haha. My tie rods take a 32mm btw.

I took off my E30/M40 oil pan by lifting the engine 50mm (2") or so with an engine crane. Have you tried one of those telescopic magnetic pick up tools down the hole? I got mine from my Snap-On van, can't remember the brand. If it works you've saved hours, if not you've got a new tool. That oil filter housing has TWO o-rings on that tube. One 24 and one 25mm diameter each about 2mm in diameter (must admit yours looks like the tube is cast in. Mine was a separate plastic part). Been there, done that. Nice clean engine interior - honey coloured. BTW don't forget to clean out the oil feed bar to the cam shaft. Clean it out til you are bored and then do it two more times.
I used Loctite 515 on the my sump - a bluish jelly. Worked like a charm - no leaks.

Yeah already tried that with no luck, pretty handy tool though I'm always using it (and dropping stuff).

Yeah I just picked up a new spray bar a little while ago, tried cleaning the old one but figured it was better to just replace it. So you didn't bother with a gasket? Did you just use the Loctite 515? And yeah my filter housing only has one o-ring

I used the 515 on both sides of the new gasket(s)

That is a neat tool for compressing the valves!

Welcome to the club of "I dropped a piece down the oil hole into the sump of my M40"

Been there, done that, got the T shirt!

I drained the oil in my sump hoping the bit would be there...no luck.

Removed the front section of the sump...not there.

I fitted a magnet onto some stiff wire and slid it along the base of the rear sump piece and heard a slight "click' and voila there was the missing piece.

And please do do say bad things about the M40 engine....other than having to replace the timing belt every so often it is a fantastic engine.

Hahaha glad to be part of the "club". I did try the same method as you, drained the oil even flushed some oil down the camshaft oil hole but no success. Pretty sure looking at the diagrams on RealOEM it would be impossible for it to flush out anyway.

Awsome luck with finding yours. I timing chain would have been fantastic haven't had the pleasure of replacing the timing belt yet, but don't get me wrong the m40 is a great engine mines done over 250,000kms and still going well.

Mine over 350k kms. Just done the belt as veh is new to me. I have a thread on it should you want to look at other stuff 've had to do.

Massive news I found the thrust ADAPTER!!! You have know idea how much happiness this brings me, I don't have you remove the oil pan to retrieve it. No engine support needed saved some $$$ there, no removal of the control arms, sway bar, steering rack and crossmember. Major PITA adverted.

This is how I did it, I used a magnetic pick up tool but needed much more length so added this thing and boom first go down the oil overflow hole it went missing in and found it.

@BMW318i, does the E36 M40 have one single sump or does it have a split design like the E30 M40? I am sure when the Engineers designed the head for the M40 they thought of putting little sieves over those oil return holes but one of the Bean Counters canned the idea......car works fine without sieves there....why add cost!

how many miles on the car cuz that looks like a gasket but could potentially be much worse

The e36 doesn't have a two piece sump its all one unit. Something to cover those holes would have been great but it was really my fault. Crisis averted anyway.
