Supercharging a 540
Hi all!
Please share with us the pros and cons of supercharging a 540. Not super tune it, but just putting the very basic kit. The impact on day by day driveability, fuel burn etc. I'm not considering rubber burning or flooring it all the time. Just some stretches from time to time. Tks, doug! |

waste of money
Save the money for repairs or buy someone elses headache and get one already charged on ebay. They sell for the same money if not less as one that hasn't been molested. Or take the money and buy an m5 and again save more for repairs. The m5 should at least pass inspections easier...and has the correct rotors/calipers to stop a 400hp car.

Nothing quite like the blown 540 I must say... I still get decent economy about 25-26mpg highway ( when normal driving of course). Certainly has potential to burn low single digits though. It is a lot of work and yes when you push the car things will wear faster. Make sure everything is up to snuff before even considering this. You can get a uses kit for a steal every once in a while but have the blower rebuilt of you so.
Compared to an M5 a blower kit will have you at close numbers, sc 540i should still be a little better for fuel economy, m5 insurance is a bit higher, sc 540i is a killer stealth car, m5 would probably pull hard if not slightly stronger than a sc 540i 6psi that is.

Depending on the blower setup (Dinan vs VF) a SC 540 will be quicker than an M5.
I know of two Dinan SC 540's that dyno'ed at 400 and 414 RWHP. Both were 6 speeds with 3.15 diffs. The M5 is also a heavier car.
