Battery issues? Need opinions ASAP

Hi guys, new to the forum and looking for some quick advice before an appointment this afternoon at a local European specialty shop.
Purchased a pre-owned 2008 328xi from a Honda dealership (big mistake). One week later, had some issues with the battery, car almost died on me. Brought it back in, they said it was definitely the battery and ordered a new one. Had to leave the car there over night because the incompetent techs didn't know how to replace the battery sufficiently, had to wait until a tech who used to work at BMW to come in the next day and finish it up.

Since they replaced the battery, I had a suspicion that there may still be a problem because every week or two, the time would lag on the computer. Not a big deal, and I would adjust it. Recently as the weather has cooled down, it has lagged much more, and at a quicker rate. Then, this Sunday as I was filling up gas and had the key in the ignition listening to the radio, the battery light flashed and the car died. Started the car back up, no problems. This morning was a brisk 42 degrees so I kind of thought I would have issues starting it back up... but no problems at all, not even a hesitation. The light has not since come back on, and I've started the car 3-4 times since the incident (no long trips).
I called a local shop that specializes in BMW/VW/Audi and they are seeing me today at 4:15... I could go down the route of arguing with the Honda idiots, but it's not even worth my time at this point, I'd rather get it done right. The guy on the phone said that sometimes with these battery problems, unfortunately it takes the problem getting worse before they can correctly diagnose the issue, but they would definitely test the battery and take a look at what else may be causing the problems.

Obviously, I want the issue eliminated ASAP. Any suggestions about what might be causing the issue (assuming its not a crappy battery compliments of Honda)?

Hi mjv, welcome to the 'Fest. There have been a lot of discussions here regarding batteries and if you do a ''search" you'll be entertained for hours.
Your description of events* is typical of a defective charging/battery system. Let's assume the battery was bad and the alternator is good. The computer was shedding draw when the battery light came on so that yout car would not fail to start. Your new shop with a BMW knowledgeable tech will have you straightened out in no time.

* with the exception of the clock lag issue

You have a vehicle Mojo leak.

Or, charging problems like DSX said.

So. First things first. Did they register the new battery w/your car's computer? Hmmmmmmmm?

When my 328i began showing the "Low Battery" icon, the problem was traced to an intermittent fault in the IBS. Hopefully, registering your new battery should reveal any IBS problem.

Take your car to an independent BMW mechanic www.bimrs.org and have him a) check to see if the battery is installed correctly, b) register the battery to the car's computer system. This should run no more than a half hour of labor.

fyi- for future reference, the battery is not hard to replace. It is a fairly easy DIY job. If the Honda mechs couldn't figure it out that does not speak well of their abilities.
