Question knocking engine-help!

Hi everyone! I have x5 3.0I 2006 & absolutely love it! Had it for 2 years now. When I purchased it, BMW dealership told me that it needs oil change every 20,000km or once a year, whatever comes first. My lights never went on. My brother changed oil in his shop and maintenance. I have started recently to hear knocking sound coming from engine. It just does not sound quiet as when I first got it. It's scaring me, I really do not want to have to replace engine. My brother keeps telling me it's the lifters & I better start looking for new engine. What do I do? Vehicle is great otherwise and preforms no prob...other than the knocking sound when running. Sounds like Kia car is what my brother told me I always use premium gas, and the best oil for it. When he changed oil and belt with sparkplugs, the noise really never went away. It was a bit quieter but still there. If I am at drive through close to building and window is down, I really hear it bad then. Don't mean to be dumb but need some good suggestions. Has anyone had this problem?

If it is the lifters, it will sound more like a ticking sound. If it's truly a knocking sound, you'll want to replace the spark plugs. It might not fix it, but it's a good thing to try first.

Another thing you can look at is getting the valve timing system checked. The BMW Dealers and some specialty shops have the tools to do that, but I read about a guy who had odd timing parameters for his Valvetronic system causing issues like knocking.

I had 2004 F150 and ticking noise is NORMAL on it, i know how it sounds. But then ticking happens only on idle, goes away as you press gas. Did you go with recommended plugs. Also was it the BMW oil ?Whats the mileage?

Did it start after the oil change? Can you post a video of the knocking sound? If it is a ticking sound it could be the lifters due to wrong oil grade of maybe dirty injectors(on a N62 v8 they can make a lot of noise) or low oil pressure... . If it's a knocking sound it could also be the chain or Vanos. Where does the sound originate from? Top engine etc.

Does it also knock under (full) load? or does it go away?
